Donor IUI?

MinnieMooMoo · 09/10/2013 15:12

Hello! Just looking for a group/quiche to join but not really sure where I fit it.

I'm intending to go it alone and have Donor Insemination by IUI starting in January providing my investigations all come back clear.

Any one else in the same boat, or has done it alone in the past?

Thanks Juneybean. Care seem to have their own bank but I'm just worried that if they only have their own & don't allow me to use another sperm bank, then there could be a long wait, as looks like there are a shortage of UK donors. I guess if they tell me this at my appointment then I will just pay them for the consultation etc. & book an appointment with another clinic.

juneybean · 20/08/2014 19:33

I've been wondering about that, I'm possibly thinking about changing clinics but want to keep my donor so wondering if I can take "him" with me so to speak.

businessadmin · 09/10/2014 21:16

Hi everyone, I had a 2nd round of IVF, I had a 3 day transfer and had two embryo transferred back into me.

I tested a week later and got a positive result, I was booked in for a scan on 2nd Oct at the clinic and the Dr found a sac with two embryos and a heartbeat.

Ive got to go back on 16th Oct, to see if everything still ok.

I know how u feel Tryingandimpatient about if to tell people you've used
Donor Sperm. My hairdresser was askin me some questions about the father, but I never said nothing.

Hopeful25 · 18/05/2015 00:38

Hello I've read this thread and it's been really helpful. I'm 32 and have just started to explore real possibility of trying on my own. Ive always wanted children but had problems with relationships. Thought about tying on my own for last five years or so but recently started talking to friends, family even my boss at work and all a lot more supportive than expected. How are people on this thred doing and can anyone else share their experiences?

FlipKat · 20/05/2015 15:14

Hi Hopeful25, I'm also contemplating going it alone and have been trying to read up here about other people's experiences. I'm 36 and in the last few years have not met anyone I've wanted to settle down and start a family with. Not exactly the position I'd hoped to be in but I'm not getting any younger so thinking at some point I'm going to have to bite the bullet!

One thing that is a worry for me is whose sperm might I end up with if I use a sperm bank! Have you thought about this side of things? What do you think about using sperm from a friend?

flyingbex · 24/06/2015 20:36

Hi
Thought i'd let you know i'm also single and currently going through IUI.. I had my trigger injection this evening and having the procedure done on Friday... I'd love to hear from others in the same boat..

Good luck

redautumnleaves · 02/07/2015 10:01

How did it go flyingbex?

Kwick709 · 17/08/2015 22:29

I hope this thread is still going! Apologies if I do not have any of the abbreviations downpat!
I am having my baseline scan for my 2nd IUI attempt tomorrow. I had to abandon my first try as I was away for work when I got the LH surge!!
I am single, 41 years old and am using donor sperm procured from Cyros.
I was using Clearblue ovulation predictor tests but with my last cycle I did a parellel run with a less expensive one bought from Amazon - I got exactly the same results (day 15) and found the strips easier to use that the sticks.
I am a little confused with the fact that I have been prescribed medication (Indometacin & Ovitrelle), when I am doing Natural Cycle IUI & I will check again tomorrow on this. Does anyone know anything about these medications?
I am with CRGH in London - my cousin had IVF there (proud mummy of twins girls) - apparently they have very good success rates. Has anyone used them?
I definitely feel like it is now or never....I was hanging out for Mr Right but have been chucka-chukaless for more than 7 years!!!!
Would love to hear from anyone looking into or havng fertility treatment - good luck to you all!

taydex · 31/08/2015 22:55

Hello Kwik,
I'm new to this website and spent a good time wandering round trying to find a still active IUI post. This one seems to be the best bet.
We're in a similar situation to you. I have a wife rather than male partner so likewise using donor sperm. We're on our 4th IUI cycle and becoming a bit old hand at this.
We've had medicated IUI. Using gonal f injection from day 3 till surgery detected (using ovulation test strips) then ovitrelle injection, followed by IUI about 45 hours later. From my reading around online that's pretty late but when I questioned our clinic they said it was totally normal...
We're using Bourn Hall Clinic in Cambridge. Went to look at about 4 and this had the best atmosphere. Sometimes I feel we have more questions than answers but they're always willing to answer our questions.
Where are you at with your treatment now? We are in the 2 week wait post IUI. The longest 2 weeks ever he he.
Good luck!

taydex · 01/09/2015 10:31

Sorry, surge not surgery!Smile

Kwick709 · 03/09/2015 21:11

Hi taydex
Thank you so much for adding your post.... i was beginning to think that no one else wanted to share anymore!
I will keep my fingers crossed for you... i am sure the waiting must be hard!!
After getting lh surge on day 15 for two cycles and then this cycle going well beyond that and having very slow growing follicles, I got my lh surge this morning (day 18) and have iui booked for tomorrow!!!! Follicle only at 15.6, just did Ovitrelle for first time (actually not as bad as I thought it would be).
I finally got to the bottom of the medication CRGH prescribed - it seems someone made a mistake on my profile and had me down for ivf!!! So the indometacin has been taken away (£4 refund) and cronine prescribed (£130 - gulp!!). I continue to ask questions every time I am in contact with clinic... Often repeating the same question.... This is all so new to me and I am a bit overwhelmed and I do not care if I am being a pain!
I am no expert but 45 hours does sound quite long... Maybe worth asking that they (again) explain why so long - but probably no need to do this as i am vety hopeful you will be pregnant by now!
All the best & please let me know how you are doing kx

taydex · 03/09/2015 23:00

Hi K,
Great news on LH sure and best of luck with the IUI tomorrow. Hopefully being on a Friday you can have a nice few days relaxing and not doing much. I read online that eating pineapple (including the core) and Brazil nuts may help during the next 2 weeks for you. No idea if it works but I'm giving it a go. Willing to try anything!
I've had varying timings too. Bit confusing but then I guess they're monitoring to see when's best. Totally agree with asking as many questions as you can. After all the amount this stuff costs I want to be as best informed as I can.
I will ask again re the 45 hours if we have to go again. Have asked a couple of yomes and they say it's fine but online seems to suggest shorter is optimal (mind you, sometimes I'm not sure if I should be listening to the Internet over trained professionals!). As you say, fingers crossed we won't have to go again.
One thing I do find helps me (especially during the 2 weeks after IUI) is making a little list of things I'd like to do if the test is negative. Like eating bad food (pate, soft cheese, rare steak...), having a few glasses of red wine, going on an exotic holiday... All things my clinic have advised against right now. I find it has helped on the 3 times we've had negative tests, I know I still had something nice to look forward to. Makes it a little easier... maybe.
Keep in touch. And good luck tomorrow.
TD x

Kwick709 · 04/09/2015 08:35

Dear TD
I Just logged on to correct my typo - gel thing is crinone gel - and saw your message.
How lovely you are - thank you so much for your great advice. Both for after iui (i heard that eating cayenne pepper can really help too) and if I am not successful this time.
Will be in touch :)
Kx

Kwick709 · 04/09/2015 22:02

So had first iui today... Why does no one tell you how painful it is? Or perhaps that is just me.
Btw TD I went on a site today "things to avoid eating so you dont miscarry" (or something like that!) and pineapple was on there.... This is all so confusing!

taydex · 04/09/2015 23:12

Hi K,
Sorry to hear you had pain with the IUI. I think I've been relatively lucky with mine. Felt a bit weird but other than that not much different to a smear. Mind you I have heard others who had pain with theirs so sure it's all perfectly normal. My clinic did advise bringing some paracetamol just in case but I totally forgot about that till I read your message.
Thanks for the warning re pineapple. Maybe I'll stop eating it just in case. So confusing isn't it?
Hope you're taking it easy post IUI. Fingers crossed...
TD x

Kwick709 · 05/09/2015 06:39

Dear TD
Define "taking it easy"?! I went straight back to work after iui and today I have whole family over for lunch plus my nephew is having a sleepover!!! Anyway I will try to be extra careful, especially when out and about as I am really clumsy and often fall over....!
So I found another webpage that talks about the pineapple trick... You are right this is all so confusing!!
I find smear tests pretty awful too but at least there they can use gel.... I will know next time, if there is is one (!) to load up on painkillers before I go... Although I think I was just very nervous/emotional. I sort of wanted to ask if I could play some music... Maybe I will do that next time....if!
How are you doing? I am keeping everything crossed?
Btw i did do the cayenne pepper thing... And i hate the stuff... It tasted really rank and then I noticed the best before was 2013....!!!!
Best wishes,
Kx

taydex · 05/09/2015 10:49

Hi K,
Ha ha, tell me about it re taking it easy. I seem to manage to always badly time mine for a busy time at work or a time when there's lots of stuff going on like parties and other events where you get questioned if you're not drinking... guess there's only so much we can do and putting our lives on hold is probably not the best solution.
I love the idea of playing music while getting IUI done. They do say you should be really relaxed. Definitely worth an ask if there's a next time.
Everything seems to be going OK here. My text is due for Thursday so trying not to think too much about that. Trying not to guess what it's going to be. Not really having any symptoms either way. Guess I've got to be patient...
Good luck with the cayenne pepper thing. Not sure I can bring myself to do that. Ha ha, you make me laugh with it being out of date!
Enjoy your weekend.

Kwick709 · 06/09/2015 12:00

Dear TD
Blimey this is hard! Every feeling in my body is under deep scrutiny and I felt sick yesterday but it us far too soon for that.... Probably can put it down to the off cayenne pepper!
Thank God I have had my nephew over to keep me distracted... How will I survive 2 more weeks of this?
Happy Sunday!
Kx

taydex · 06/09/2015 20:19

I know K, it's hard isn't it? Feels like the longest 2 weeks. Our first cycle I convinced myself I felt different. Sick sometimes. Sore boobs sometimes. The next 2 cycles I felt nothing. This time somewhere in between. It's probably all mental. I don't know. Hang on in there, soon the 2 weeks will be over and you can stop second guessing because you'll know one way or another. It is hard though. I always end up counting down the days. Our test is Thursday so not too long to go now... still feels like forever! What date is your test?
How old is your nephew? We're off to see ours on Friday. They're 8, 5 and 1. I can't wait!
Happy Sunday!

taydex · 06/09/2015 20:26

P.S. K - have you told any of your family or friends you're doing IUI? We've not told any family (I told my sister ages ago that we were thinking about exploring our options but not really said anything since), and only 1 close friend. It's hard not having people to talk to (hence coming on here) but then I don't really want everyone knowing our business so kind of happy to keep it the way it is. Well, actually I'd love for it to work so we can shout to the whole world from the rooftops!!! He he he.

Kwick709 · 07/09/2015 20:26

Dear TD
Thursday will be here very soon... Okay so maybe not that fast but it will come. I have to test Friday week... How will I ever last?
My nephew is 10... He grew up so fast! He made a great sous chef fir je on Saturday and today he is off for a week of adventure with his school... Both my brother and I went to the same place in Wales when we were little wnd have filled him full of stories (for example the time I fell over in a river and got a piece of rock in my knee - which is still there!).
So here is the thing: I told LOADS of people... My family, my friends and work... So now when I get asked it is like "Ask me no questions and I will tell you no lies." My boss advised me to not tell anyone until past month 3 as high chance of miscarriage (she lost a baby in her 40s so is hyper sensitive) but lots of people know I was getting treatment so all a bit awkward at the moment....
I am trying to take it easy but I travel a lot with work - off again tomorrow!!!
So happy to have the crinone clumps to look forward to! Grin
Keep me posted!
Kx

taydex · 08/09/2015 16:15

Hi K,
So it's Tuesday... almost Thursday...?! I must be patient! He he. To be honest with you 2 of the previous 3 cycles I have had a visit from the lovely Aunt Flo the day before the preg test so have known in advance. Not sure if that's a good thing or not... So, I remain hopeful. Only time will tell. I am going to update my list of things to do if it's a negative result this evening (mostly involving a large glass of red so far), get my head in a good place for either result. On the plus side it is my birthday tomorrow so that should keep me distracted! Smile Hang on in there, the wait seems like it will be forever but it does come round soon enough. At least your work travel will keep you busy.
Ah, 10 years old is such a fun age. I can't wait to see my nephews at the weekend. It's my sister's 40th so I might have to add drinking at her party on my 'things to do is test is -ve' list! I bet your nephew will have a lovely time away with school. I think all of our school trips were to Wales...
So, the lovely Crinone... I found it was fine for the first 5 days or so and didn't really get much coming out again (at least nothing more than a small amount of watery fluid perhaps). I spent forever wandering round online trying to find out if I should remove it or just let nature do its thing. General consensus seems to be it's not a bad idea to... how do I say this in a polite way (not sure there is one!)... manually gently remove some with a finger in the shower/bath (don't "douche" as this can introduce germs). Perhaps just from near the entrance, don't go poking around too much. It's still pretty gross to be fair. The first time I did it was on day 1 of my period on the first cycle and that really wasn't pleasant! On the later cycles I have removed some probably roughly ever other day, possibly every 3rd day from about a week after IUI. I still don't know if that's the right thing to be doing but seems to be the advice I found online. I probably should have asked the clinic but now feel a bit of an idiot after a few cycles!
Take care.

Oh, and I found this online which I found helpful: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx?tabname=Pregnancy&nobanner=dassignup
No mention of pineapple...
Also see attachment from a book I found in the library...

Sorry, last one, promise...
www.fertilityafter40.com/does-eating-pineapple-with-bromelain-help-with-implantation-during-pregnancy.html
Looking around the issue is it contains Bromelain which can soften the cervix. But sounds like you'd have to eat 7 pineapples for this to happen!

Kwick709 · 09/09/2015 21:58

Dear TD
Happy Birthday! I hope you had a great day!
Thanks for all your messages - I will go over in detail tomorrow... I have just arrived back and am shattered so off to beddy byes!
