HSG test. Has anyone had one ?

Hi. I'm under an NHS infertility clinic and iv'e to have an HSG test to check my fallopian tubes are not blocked. I'm 38 and been trying to conceive for 14 months. the clinic has already established that i'm not ovulating so i guess that would be the reason i'm not falling pregnant. How long does the HSG take to do and is it painful ? Quite nervous about it but know i need to do it if i want to take things further at the clinic. Iv'e heard that sometimes women can be more fertile after having it done ? I'm hoping that might be the case but doubtful as i'm not ovulating.

Yes, I've had it. It was absolutely fine. Just like a smear test with a bigger audience (gynae and 2 nurses in my case)! I can't say it was a bundle of laughs, but it wasn't painful - the speculum goes in, they put a tube through the cervix and then squirt some liquid through and xray to make sure it comes out into the abdominal cavity. I had read about some people finding it painful but I didn't even know that the liquid had gone through until they told me it was all over.

I think it can increase fertility if it removes some minor debris in the tubes, but if you aren't ovulating, it won't help. But it should make sure that you are in with a chance once they induce ovulation with drugs, which will presumably be the next step.

Agree with what Eurochick said - I took painkillers (parapet and nurofen)'beforehand which I think helped. Being as relaxed as possible helps.

It's slightly embarrassing, as there are a few more people but its no big deal.
