Anyone about to start/just started TTC number 2?

1000 replies

mrsm22 · 03/09/2013 20:35

Hi ladies, I am 31 and have one DS already. After my DS I went back on the pill but have decided to stop the pill and start TTC baby number 2 and wondered if anyone was also just about to start trying or just started and we could follow each other and share as we go along. I literally have stopped my pill last week for the 7 day break, and am meant to start taking it again tomorrow but obviously won't be, so I am very literally just starting to try for number two but am very excited! That's why I thought it might be nice to go through it with other people who are also trying. I have heard some people say that after your first baby you are more fertile but I am not sure so I am really not sure how long it will take this time. Does it usually not take as long second time round? It has taken a lot for me to decide for definite that I'd like another as I had an awful time in labour with forceps and 3rd degree tears etc which really scared me and must admit I'm terrified of another scary birth experience.

God, no, I'm not that brainy, Mrs! Just good at applying stuff. The academic course was tough, but I did well at the course where you apply the law. :-) I'm a trainee solicitor, so I do work in a related job. I also hate it!

Soooo, book club? Yes, but I'd have to borrow the books from the library as I don't have the spare cash to buy books or the space to store them! And can we have a generous time period for reading them, until we work out how long we really need?! :-)

I think I'd prefer to work with numbers as I'm not too bad at that. Fewer really fecking irritating clients to deal with there, I imagine, Mrs?! I've been called a c just for doing my job before. And a f**g bitch. Nice, eh?!

mrsm22 · 18/10/2013 22:47

Hungry - I be that is hard work and pretty tough. Do you/ will you specialise in a certain area (if that's how it works, I don't really know )? Your job will definitely be more interesting than mine. I hate telling people I work in tax as sounds so boring. I never know how to describe my job but I'm what's called a CA, basically work in a huge department of accountants and we only have big clients that we do accounting for, like Asda, whiskas cat food, WM morrisons etc. Basically it's my job to check how much work is done on the client and produce bills for clients, issue bills and also the job has a risk management side so when we take on a new client it's my job to check then out ( money laundering checks etc and I'm responsible for typing up engagement letters between the firm and client , typing up contracts etc). I prefer the billing side of it but I just don't feel the same as I did before I had DS. I used to love my job but since going back I don't feel I've got the same motivation and I'm always wondering what DS is doing and thinking about him. I find myself ringing DH or my DM a lot to find out how he is during those 3 days. DH said I didn't have to go back but I wanted to try giving 3 days a go (for the money) but obviously like everyone else on here, now I'm just trying to get pregnant ASAP and that would fall in line with my plans re work. I know I wouldn't go back after another baby. I'd take my one year mat leave and then contact work a couple of months before the year was up to say I wasn't going back. I would go back to working again once I had two DC at school but not to this same sort of job. Maybe teaching assistant or something more fitting with hours etc. I get pi??ed off with where I work as they don't seem to care if you can't stay late as you have a baby to get back to and they think it's ok to ask you to travel to different offices all over, which I'm not prepared to do now.
Sorry for rambling on there about work!
Hungry - we don't have to do the book club if you don't fancy, and it depends how easy it is for you to get to the library etc. Google the book that ATruth mentioned and see what you think. It might help you sleep . I find reading good for that. x oh by the way, your pics of your baby in FB are gorgeous Hungry. I saw the one you put of her in her cot, very pretty baby. My nan told me today that my DS is a pretty boy.

I've just finished a masters mrsm and toyed with the idea of a phd. Then I remembered I quite like having a life Grin I work almost full time. Officially I have an afternoon off a week. In reality, I usually work during it, but at least that means I have marginally less to do at the weekend.

The library will almost certainly have that book hungry - it might be in the teen/childrens section though. I'm not sure if it will help you sleep; supposed to be a bit of a thriller Smile

mrsm22 · 18/10/2013 23:06

ATruth - what did you do your MA in? I was the same with the idea of a PhD. I still feel it would be a massive achievement but it's soooo much work, I think with children and working it would just be impossible. They say that most people who start one actually give up. I think if I could go back I would have studied and become a vet. Definitely not clever enough but that would have been a dream job for me as I love animals (we have two cats).

OP posts:
ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 18/10/2013 23:18

From what you've said I bet you'd be clever enough to be a vet Smile It's funny looking back and thinking about what choices you would make with the benefit of hindisght though isn't it? I think I like the idea of a PHD more than the reality. I'd love to be DrTruth Grin

HungryHorace · 18/10/2013 23:19

Practising law is actually VERY dull indeed, Mrs! I'm so bored of it. And I don't think I'll qualify now as, like you, I don't want to put the expected hours in. The legal sector is being destroyed anyway with new rules about costs, so the expectation is for you to work harder for far less reward than previously.

I'm happy to join in a book club. I try to get to rhyme time on a Wednesday, so can get to the library easily. I'll look at the book tomorrow though.

I don't have trouble sleeping. It's DD who struggles! :-) I'd read during the day else it'd take all year to read a book. 2 pages and I'm gone in bed!

And thank you, Mrs. We think she's cute, but we are biased! We're still experimenting with the cot bed. I'm sure she'll like it in the end!

lucyjojo · 18/10/2013 23:20

I have just reserved that book at my local library, so hopefully they will have a copy at yours too Hungry. It does sound interesting, certainly different to what I normally go for. I like the idea of starting a book club, combines two of my favourite things - books and babies!!
Your job sounds interesting Mrs! More interesting than mine anyway! You get to do some exciting things it sounds like, and the prospect of travel sounds nice, although it's not much fun when you have a child I suppose. My job is basically admin assistant, we administer and oversee qualifications for people who want to train as an outdoor/climbing instructor, or mountain guide, that sort of thing. I think I'd do the same after another baby too with going back to work. not sure if I'd be a SAHM but it would certainly be very part time whatever I did. I've thought about doing some proofreading courses as that would be a good job to do from home, but there's so much expense involved with anything! I've thought about TA too, it would be a fab job to have with children of your own, and I think it would be lovely to help kids learn to read.
Very impressed by head of english ATruth! and solicitor Hungry! I'm still firmly in the 'when I grow up I want to be a...' camp. If I could go back ten years I would do a degree in Psychology I think. I still change my mind on a daily basis between teacher, midwife, SAHM or running my own business! I'm relying on DH at the moment to go for a career and earn us some money!!
anyway I should stop wittering on and really go to bed, i have to be up at 5.30 to be in work for 7 Hmm.

lucyjojo · 18/10/2013 23:22

DrTruth - brilliant!!!
Hungry your little girl is gorgeous! And I love her name!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 18/10/2013 23:31

Your job sounds fun lucy - do you get to do any of the outdoorsy stuff yourself? I've just started climbing and love it.

I also need to get to bed. I'm not working tonight, but DH has gone out so I suspect he will be worse for wear in the morning and I'll be on 'get up' duty. Come on DS, sleeeeeep.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 18/10/2013 23:31

tonight = tomorrow
Yawwwwwn

HungryHorace · 19/10/2013 01:06

I've just registered for my local library online. They have 7 copies of that book. All are on loan, 3 are overdue, one by 2 months!! Hopefully it'll come back in soon.

mrsm22 · 19/10/2013 08:20

Morning all, Professor ATruth and my solicitor friend,
I'm just going to check Anazon and see how much that book is.

mrsm22 · 19/10/2013 08:24

Ok checked Amazon and it's only £4.57 for that book by Patrick Ness, A Knight of Never Letting Go. Are we going to go for it and when do we all think it would be good to start? I think it would be good to start the same day reading it. If I order I, it will take a few days to come probably x

OP posts:
HungryHorace · 19/10/2013 08:41

Make sure you buy a Christmas present or something while you're there so you spend £10 and get free delivery!

We should go for it. :-)

IBelieveInEngels · 19/10/2013 08:49

Morning all. Sorry I missed all the chatter last night. Ironically I was reading!

I have been doing the 50 book challenge this year (though not posting on the thread) and finished book 48 last night (the 100 year old who climbed out a window...).

Love Patrick Ness..have the trilogy on my bookshelf. Another teacher here - English and drama at an international and bilingual school. Will pm my location Truth as don2 want to out myself (but am not in any of the big cities - am*dam, rotterdam or the hague).

I hated 50 shades but read it anyway Blush The writing style was so repetitive (I wanted to punch her Inner Goddessby the end of the 1st book).

I have so many books on my kindle and bookshelves that am trying (and failing) to read them before I buy anything else new. Am now down to 10 unread books on my kindle and a stack that I got for Christmas and my birthday last winter.

Death comes to Pemberley was okay Truth - more Austen than PD James. I've been reading a lot of Agatha Christie this year as am writign a whodunnit for NaNoWriMo this year.

I would love to do a Masters - my degree is in Drama so would love to do soem literature studies.

Mrs I read a lot of teenage fiction. So much easier when the only time I can read is before bed.

Has anyone elseread the Sookie Stackhouse books? Totally addictive and much better than the TV show. And the Game of Thrones books are fantatsic as well (don't think I did any marking in April at all!)

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody.

Metalhead · 19/10/2013 09:09

Hi all, I like the idea of the book club, but I'm in right in the middle of a book at the moment and have a few more sitting on the shelf waiting to be read so I'll probably have to pass on this one. I love Game of Thrones too IBelieve! Usually I read crime thrillers like Tess Gerritsen, Karin Slaughter or Jo Nesbo. DH and I read for half an hour or so most nights as we find it's a good way to wind down before going to sleep.

Really interesting to see how many different jobs we have represented, and how not many people actually seem to enjoy what they're doing! I'm a b2b journalist reporting on agricultural commodities, again something I just fell into after uni and stayed in because of company benefits. I have a BA in Cultural Studies and an MA in European Studies, and also did a couple of years of English and American Lit. (I'm not the brainy one in the family though - my brother has a PhD in Physics and his girlfriend is an obstetrician!)

I didn't hear back about that job I applied for this week so I guess I didn't get an interview. Never mind.

Whoever said they'd be a vet if they could back in time - I've got a friend who's a vet, but she gave up work after having her DC as the hours are really anti-sociable and not family friendly at all. She said there are hardly any part-time positions, and her DH is constantly on call at the weekends.

If I could go back to uni I would do a degree in nutrition or dietetics as I'm really interested in all that (although I don't always eat that healthily myself...)

I'm going out in London tonight for a friend's 30th to a tapas restaurant and am really looking forward to that! She's recently got engaged as well so maybe I'll get to be a bridesmaid [hopeful] - I've never been one before as all my close friends I have now were already married before I got to know them or lived too far away.

mrsm22 · 19/10/2013 09:59

Hi all , so who is in for the book club starting with the chosen book by ATruth? Is it just me, ATruth, Lucy and Hungry? Hungry - shall we wait until you've got the book from the library? I guess there's no point me ordering from amazon until Monday with it now being the weekend. Let's finalise the idea over this weekend.
ATruth - are you still in for book club?
Metal - I always wanted to be a journalist when I was at school. I remember doing some work experience at the BBC when I was doing my A Levels. A good friend if my mum and dads is one of the editors at the bbc so i managed to get in and I loved it. You've obviously done very well as I hear it's impossible to get a job as a journalist. During my time with them there was a really interesting story about a 12 year old girl who had got pregnant (by her mum's partner) and I went with the journalists and camera crew to interview at the family's home. It was great. Have a good time tonight, hope you get to be bridesmaid. x

I'm still in for the book group. I'm just about to take ds to the library so will look for it there, otherwise get it for the kindle. Don't get me wrong hungry - I love my job but struggle with the work life balance. Yours sounds much cooler. I actually trained as a journalist and swapped careers about ten years ago.

mrsm22 · 19/10/2013 11:22

ATruth - let us know if you get it at the library. I will have to buy it or order from amazon. Don't be starting without me! x

Stacks · 19/10/2013 13:59

I like the idea of a book club. I've been meaning to read more recently but haven't managed much. When DS was tiny I read Life of Pi on my phone with the kindle app. It's a really good book, though not one I'd have thought of reading normally.
I've read The Knife of Never Letting Go recently, it's good. Though I remember some stuff being a bit annoying. You're reading the thoughts of the main character a lot, but he keeps secrets from you and just makes hints. Found that method of storytelling quite clumsy. The overall story is good though.
Has anyone read The Golden Compass series? By Phillip Pullman? I thought that was excellent.

I'd be up for reading anything I've not read before really, I like being exposed to new authors and genres.

Oh, I have a computer science degree, but nearly did an English lit a level. The teacher wasn't very good though.

Toothpastekissesno2 · 19/10/2013 14:07

Wow there is always so much to catch up on I can't keep up!
I would do a bk group. Used to have one with mates but it fizzled out as life got too busy. I also did a degree in cultural studies which inc English lit so sounds like we are all book worms! What's the book?
I went out on date night last and drank too much white wine. Feeling bad and doubly bad as trying for baby. I am so convinced it's not going to happen anytime soon that I kind of think it's ok but still...the tww is hard! What does everyone else do? No drinking?
I would like to join fb but am still anxious about being discovered on such a private subject! X

Stacks · 19/10/2013 14:12

Oops, forgot I was on page 2 when I posted that. I hope you all enjoy the book, it is a good series!

mrsm22 · 19/10/2013 16:09

Afternoon ladies!
Stacks - how are you feeling? Still feeling really happy for you! I have read a bit about that book and it's not one I 'd normally go for either but I'm open to something new and new authors etc. Shall we change the book if you have already read that ? It doesn't seem fair, I'm sure we can all pick another.
ATruth - have you had a nice day with DS? I took my DS to the park and there was a mms there with one of those fair ground amusements , you know the teacup one where you sit in a teacup and get spun round. We were heading for the playground and DS saw the teacup ride and wouldn't move in any other direction so I went on with him. Came back, had some lunch and DH has now gone to work. Right let's sort this book club ! I think most people are in but Stacks has read our book already. ATruth, what do you think we should do? Do you want to choose another? I'm going to have a look at some titles and throw them in a message and we can all choose one maybe that none of us have read. I do fancy reason that one you chose though but could save for another time. I don't mind.
Toothpaste - hello, how are you ? You are in for book club too! The FB group is private. No one else can see our group on there or our posts. Is that right Hungry? Don't worry about having a drink too much . I don't drink so I've not had to cut down but trying to cut down on tea drinking and just try to have the one cup a day (sometimes two but no more). Don't beat yourself up though, you have to have some enjoyment.
Hungry - are you ok? x

Re book club, has anyone not read the Twilight books by Stephanie Meyer? Meant to be good. I haven't read any of those, if no one else has is it worth a go trying her first one (not sure of the order). Just throwing some ideas around. I'm more than happy with ATruth's choice but just thinking about Stacks x
