Two weeks of period pain on and off but 2 BFN :-(

Hello everyone,

I have just come across Mumsnet while googling for advice on my symptoms, so hello to you all and I hope some of you with more experience will be kind enough to advise me!

I have had mild period pain on and for 14 days now, and I have been so convinced I would get AF that I have been wearing towels at night, but there has been nothing. Have done 2 First Response tests, but both were negative.

The reason I am not sure if I could still be pregnant despite the BFNs is that last month I came off the pill after 17 years, so I don't know how long my cycle is and when AF should be due, or when I should be testing.

I had the breakthrough bleed between 29th July and 3rd Aug. Since then, DH and I have been TTC, but as I can't yet use an ovulation test it's been a bit hit and miss. I had very sharp cramps in my lower left hand stomach on 14th Aug (possibly ovulation?). I took the tests on 23rd Aug and 26th Aug. Is that too soon?

Any help at all very gratefully received.

Usually when come off pill recommend having 2 or 3 periods before trying to conceive as can increase chances of ectopic pregnancy. Sometimes tests dont always show positive until week 4 even though say accurate from 2 weeks on home pregnancy tests. Best thing would be to speak to your gp and take early morning sample of urine as at this stage would be best sample to test for hormone, if test in afternoon urine usually too dilute for detection until further on in pregnancy.

Thanks caringmummy. The pains are not severe, as I'd expect with ectopic pregnancy x

Hi Louise

This is my first month off the pill, was on it for 12 years. My dates are exactly same as yours! I had my normal withdrawal bleed 29th-2nd, then I had weird cramps 14th-16th. I tested at the weekend and negative. Yesterday and today ive had some brown discharge which I hope turns into a proper period. Its all so confusing when coming off the pill, as everyone is so different with how long it takes for cycles to come back and be normal.

LouiseB2013 · 27/08/2013 14:06

Hello MrsB, Oh- that's exactly what I was hoping for- someone with similar dates like you would read my post! Fingers crossed for us both. Have you had any period pain feelings since the 14th? Mine come and go, which means I never quite know if AF is on it's way or not...

If you ovulated around 14th Aug and your cycle was 'normal' (which, tbh, I doubt given you've been on the Pill so long), you'd still be pretty early for testing for pregnancy atm. I'd give it another couple of days at least.

LouiseB2013 · 27/08/2013 14:50

Thanks RaRaZ- I didn't know that. I actually thought I was late for testing! Thank God for this site.

Hiya, Just thought I'd say that I was on the pill for 12 years came off in may. My periods seem to be on time but I am suffering with period & ovulation pain at the minute. My ovulation cramps start about 5 days before I ovulate and total 7days.
I'm hoping it will correct itself sooner rather than later though

MrsB2013 · 27/08/2013 17:20

Louise ive had odd cramps and an achy feeling. On Saturday I thought af would arrive as I had more pains, but as I said only had some brown discharge so far, but no pain at all. When I was on the pill, my af was every 28 days and didn't get any pms at all.

What pill were you on? Do you mind me asking how old you are? Im 32 and I know ive only been off it a month, but im starting to think I should of stopped it sooner

RaRaZ · 27/08/2013 21:30

Oh, and be wary of symptom-spotting: you can find anything when you're looking for it! I had every pg symptom under the sun last month and AF was a day later than expected, but definitely not pg! Your mind can play tricks on you. If you ovulated 14th Aug and you have a textbook 28-day cycle, I'd expect your period to start tomorrow or the 29th - but remember, you have no idea how long your cycles are going to be as you've just come off the Pill. A normal Luteal phase (second half of your cycle, starting the day after ovulation) is 10-18 days so, as you don't know how long yours is, I'd give it till 18 days after ovulation to expect AF. That would be 1st September.

LouiseB2013 · 27/08/2013 23:07

Thanks RaRaZ- those dates are really useful. Somehow I worked it out that I should have started on Sun 25th, and as First Response was supposedly an early result test, I thought I was actually slow to take it!

MrsB2013- I have just turned 34 and my most recent pill brand was Dianette. I started on Dianette at 16 for my skin. I've been on and off various pills such as Yasmin, Microgynon and Cilest since then. Two years ago, I was on Microgynon and come off for a three month break, just to see if it was masking any problems. I did have two regular AFs after the breakthrough bleed, but my skin was horrendous so I went back on Dianette. I did always get cramps the day before AF on the pill though, but not when I had the last three month break, and never for two weeks. Hope everything is alright down there :-/

Hello, just an update for those of you who helped me. AF came today. Slightly sad that there is no little bean, but obviously grateful that I have an AF at all so soon. Thank you for all the advice and I'll be back on the site soon no doubt! Xx

Sorry to hear it's no BFP, but your cycles should start to even out now Smile. Best of luck for next month!
