Logistics of the 'turkey baster' method

Sorry, I know this has been discussed a lot recently, but DP and I are going to try it and there's a couple of things we are not sure of:

Do you use an actual turkey baster or a syringe or what? Blush Feel like an idiot for taking this too literally, but I'm really not sure!

How long does the syringe or whatever need to be? Cos you need to get it close to, if not through, the opening of the cervix, right? Is it uncomfortable?

We were planning to have sex with a condom and then me use what's -ahem- collected in the condom for turkey-basting purposes, but I just read online that this is not a good idea as the condom may contain spermicide. How would you know? Does it actually say on the packet? We don't usually use them.... If this is a problem - and DP does NOT want to come in a cup - what would you suggest?

Many thanks Smile

I think its a case of a 5ml syringe from chemist, in as far as u can then shoot contents out fast. Think I read that having an orgasm after can help.

Wouldn't it be easier to just do it the regular way if you are just going to collect via a condom while DTD?! I guess you must have a reason.

I think if you Google or look on eBay for insemination kits you can see the type of thing its best to use.

Good luck!

I will PM you RaRaZ.

RaRaZ · 14/08/2013 18:13

Thanks Smile

Ali - possibly! It's just we're having problems ttc and I don't think my CM is ideal. I've read that if you can get it up to, or through, the cervix, the problem of less-than-ideal CM is mostly eliminated as by then you've halved the sperm's journey... God this is cringeworthy!

You can't start poking things up your actual cervix, you'll introduce infection and all sorts.

My dd was surrogate baby, hand job, pot, kept warm in my arm Pitt in mad drive across town, needle less syringe I make this point as so many medical people freaked out when we said syringe and then my friend squirted it as deep and fast as poss and yes, vibrator, all a bit tmi but 14 yr old dd is right here Grin

RaRaZ · 14/08/2013 19:12

Well I thought if I boiled it first or something... Blush - was meaning to put the 'nozzle' (don't think that's the right word, but you know what I mean) right up so it's touching the opening in my cervix.... no?

Why's it important to do it as fast as possible? I've read other things saying to do it very slowly and gradually, but I can't remember the reasoning for that.

Thanks for sharing your story btw Smile - though I'm not sure what you mean exactly Confused: how was she a surrogate if you carried her herself??? And who were you giving a handjob to and who was squirting the sample?!

I think you're meant to let the semen rest for a while to "liquefy", but maybe google that. Normal conforms have spermicidal lubricant. Not good if TTC. You can get ones with no lubricant. Why won't he jizz in a cup? I wanked DH off and caught it in a clean cup.

Oh, and a syringe will not reach your cervix. I can barely reach mine with my fingers. You need something about the length of an erect penis, that squirts the semen at just the right angle. Do you see what I'm getting at?! Believe me, we did this to satisfy my obsession with TTC when my obsession was causing his performance anxiety.

Why are you worried about your CM? Are you sure you're ovulating? Have you had his semen analysed?

bonzo77 · 14/08/2013 19:24

Conforms? condoms FFS!

RaRaZ · 14/08/2013 21:02

Lol Bonzo Grin. Thanks for your help though. I can reach my cervix with my fingers easily enough, so was hoping that a syringe might well do it - though I have yet to shop the options Blush. Why, what on earth did you use?? Suggestions welcomed!

He doesn't want to come in a cup because he finds the whole idea too clinical and unnatural. He's not a big fan of the whole turkey baster idea full-stop, but has agreed to it if sex is used as the means of 'production'...

I don't really get proper EWCM Blush Sad... I don't know for sure if I'm ovulating. I know I have ovulated in the past, but obviously this doesn't mean I will again, which worries me. I'm having 'Day 21' tests done again this month as last month was low (though I think I ovulated according to bbt/CM/cervical position/OPK). Haven't had his sperm checked, no. Don't think GP will do it as we're young and haven't reached the (rather arbitrary if you ask me) year cut-off point, but I think he's going to ask and we'll get a kit off the net if not.

I read that how much mucus you see coming out on loo roll etc isn't actually a good indicator of how much you have so you may be OK on that front.

Have you thought about using a conception lube like conceive plus or preseed? Its sperm friendly lube so may be just the ticket for you if worried you don't have enough ewcm. I bought in boots and Amazon.

I had some potential issues and ended up discussing turkey baster with gp and also a consultant gynae, and both said use syringe and ignore stuff you read about waiting for it to liquefy as its not necessary.

I am not sure how long you've been trying but may not be worth doing turkey baster yet as its more hassle than the regular way.

Definitely worth trying ovulation tests, I bought cheapies from Amazon something like a tenner for 50 (so at least 6 months worth)

Hth...

AliBingo · 14/08/2013 21:36

Sorry just saw you've been monitoring ov with bbt and opk etc. Ru def DTD at right time I.e. 2 or 3 days before?

QOD · 14/08/2013 22:21

I didn't carry dd, I'm infertile. She is dh and my friends biologically. He did the hand work-we couldn't work "together" in the end, it was all too complicated/off putting.
He did that, I kept it warm and took it to her, left her to it, when semen comes out it squirts quite fast so she tried to replicate that!

I can't see that it's more likely to work than sex, we didn't have a choice as, well, neither my husband or friend wanted to have sex with one another Grin

wrighty2010 · 15/08/2013 11:42

Hi, I will put a link up to information on home insemination I found, its quite interesting and goes though the whole process, the site also has kits to use which are very good and sell extender tips which means the sperm has less distance to travel. There is lots of information on the site so may be worth a look, hope this helps! good luck xx blogs.prideangel.com/post/2011/07/Home-Insemination-The-Ups-and-Downs.aspx

PuppyMummy · 15/08/2013 13:43

hi. just wanted to say you dont need to hav 'proper' ewcm to be ovulating. I hav had all the tests (we will be having ivf) and I am ovulating but I rarely get 'text book' ewcm.

VJONES1985 · 15/08/2013 18:50

QOD - what a lovely thing your friend did for you and your husband!

We're looking into this method at the moment as well, everything I e read says you need to be careful not to bruise the cervix as it will become more prone to infection which is not good when you are ttc... It might make more sense for you to buy pre seed, it's a lubricant that helps the sperm rather than turkey basting...!

There is a lot of good info on the pride angel website all about this sort of thing! They sell all of the kit you might want as well!

RaRaZ · 15/08/2013 22:07

Thanks a lot for sharing all this guys, it's been really helpful of you Flowers. Re CM, I check it internally, so definitely should be accurate. And I've got Conceive Plus. Hasn't helped so far, but I've got the internal applicator ones for this month so fingers crossed!

QOD You have a wonderful friend.

Cm helps conception try dtd and use preseed you can order it on amazon also try soy isoflavones

Tea1Sugar · 16/08/2013 06:19

Op - have you used preseed to help with cm? First month of trying I had virtually none so used preseed second cycle and got my bfp. If not, good luck with this method!

RaRaZ · 16/08/2013 07:35

I've got Conceive Plus, which is pretty much the same thing from a different brand as far as I can see.

Pearly: I really wouldn't recommend soy isoflavones! I've used them for a couple of months: first month, ovulation was delayed and second, it's in doubt whether I ovulated at all. Haven't used them this month for that very reason.

I think the penis is probably the best sperm delivery system, tbh. A syringe can work but has to be second best. If you think the issue is EWCM, then try preseed - it comes with syringes so it goes right inside like CM, rather than where you put normal lube

samesexmothers14 · 24/10/2014 11:47

How would you do sperm on toy penis as I am same sex couple and getting sperm from a friend. Will the toy hurt or damage the swimmers? And you have to do this 1-2 days before period starts? Right. I know the friend has sperms BC in Feb he will be a new father to set of twins. Then with me myself is a twin I have a twin sister mirror twins. It does runs in his and in my family. I also already have two kids. Not twins.

idlefolly · 24/10/2014 12:55

OP have you tried pre-seed? It's meant to mimic CM.
