Peeing after DTD?!

i mean imediately after - does this lower the chance of concieving?! (or am i being thick!?) Confused

I think it's healthy to have a wee as soon after dtd as possible, seem to remember reading it somewhere before! Not sure though...

LadyCurd · 13/08/2013 06:30

In terms of not getting cystitis it is a good idea to wee after sex to flush away any bacteria. In terms of conception as soon as semen deposits at top of vagina it sort of coagulates for about 30mins (sperm aren't really going anywhere in this time) after 30mins or so the sperm liquifies and the swimming starts. So not a huge problem if you wee immediately after sex (so long as ejaculate deep inside you not by entrance IYSWIM) but good idea to be horizontal for a while after to stop the liquid dribbling out. You could always insert a mooncup before a trip too loo to help keep it in then wear it overnight as removing it will suction loads out!

Good luck!

I dont agree with ladys post. once ejaculation happens, the sperm swim towards the cervix, everything that 'leaks' out is seminal fluid. keeping lying down after doesn't do anything.

fwiw, I have tried this method (not having a wee and staying lying down) for over a yr and not pregnant yet!!!

RaRaZ · 13/08/2013 10:59

I think it's kinda between what Lady and Puppy said (useful, I know!). Peeing after sex is definitely supposed to reduce the risk of UTIs as it gives you chance to flush out any bacteria that have gathered around your urethra. However, I've never had a UTI in the year or so I've been (having a lot of sex with Blush) DP and I've only ever peed after sex if I've felt the need to. So I guess it probably depends on how prone you are to UTIs.

Re conceiving, I believe the sperm start swimming straight away. Studies have shown that within seconds of ejaculation, some are already through the cervix and away. I believe it takes around 15mins for the fastest to reach the egg and up to 45mins for the slowest (which probably aren't the best ones for fertilisation anyway), so if you're going to lie down with your legs in the air, it's generally recommended you do so for around half an hour after ejaculation. Orgasm is supposed to help too: it creates a kind of 'suction' to pull the sperm up through the cervix. So, if you're one of the many women who struggle to orgasm through sex, now might be the time to encourage your DP to give you a helping hand as it were!

LadyCurd · 14/08/2013 20:51

Yes some sperm are found in cervix pretty quickly but semen does coagulate post ejaculation for up to 30mins before liquefying - see [[http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semen]]

Also the cervix upsuck theory on orgasm is highly disputed nowadays but it's fun and can't hurt!

But what do I know- I only got a first for reproductive physiology in my degree :D (although baby brain means its a while since I studied!)
Best of luck ladies

I kept my legs up in the air for 20 minutes after DTD. I got myself comfy on a pillow, rested my feet up against the wall and thought happy thoughts about all the little sperms swimming in the right direction as opposed to dripping out of me on the way to the toilet Grin

We got pregnant our first month of trying Grin Now obviously I'm not saying the legs in the air had any bearing on that, but as someone else said, "It can't hurt" Grin If we ever have another baby in the future I know I will be doing it again!!

Just do whatever feels right for you Grin

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 21:06

I lay with my bum on a pillow for at least 20 mins after sex :)

LadyCurd · 14/08/2013 21:11

Depends if your uterus is retroverted or not ladies. Some women maybe better on all fours with bum in air as their cervix is in different position (more at front than back). no scientific evidence on that one just a hypothesis!

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 21:14

So we're better off just laying flat!

LadyCurd · 14/08/2013 21:15

On your front or on your back dependent on where your cervix is and a catheter should solve the wee issue.
Sorted ;)

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 21:16

Oh, it's all so simple...

RaRaZ · 14/08/2013 21:16

I do legs in the air Grin. Hasn't worked yet, but I have a severely retroverted uterus so I reckon the angle will be much more conducive to travel if I'm on my back with my legs up!

blueamber · 14/08/2013 21:54

If you susceptible to cystitis, maybe stay flat for 5 minutes then go have a wee. I don't think legs in the air does anything, sperm can swim against gravity.

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 22:01

I'm susceptible to cystitis (another lovely aide effect of diabetes) and was worried that dtd more often would flare it up but so far so good.

blueamber · 14/08/2013 22:25

That's good, vjones. I had it a few times and it's horrible! You could get some cranberry juice or pills just to be sure.

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 22:31

Cranberry juice don't cut it with me, I've had it so bad that I've bled (and cried!) but could get some medication just in case.

blueamber · 14/08/2013 22:40

Ouch!

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 22:45

Yeah, it's lovely...

pommedechocolat · 14/08/2013 23:06

RaRaz - me too but I always lay on my front. On the back even with legs up sperm won't be at cervix entrance which is at front side for us types. Both dds were conceived doggy style too (i think!) which I think helps for the same reason!

RaRaZ · 15/08/2013 22:09

My cervix opening is downwards, not to the front so I just try to tilt everything upsidedown!

internationallove985 · 21/08/2013 00:49

Just found this thread. With the best will in the world I can't hold my wee in after D.T.D. I'm running for the toilet right away. xxx

KedenTTC1Cycle2 · 21/08/2013 02:01

I normally do pee shortly (5-8mins) after sex. Mostly because I genuinely feel the need to pee! Doesn't sex do that to everyone Blush?!?

However, during Cycle #1 I did do the legs up in the air thing for about 15mins or so. I got comfy, chatted with DP and just relaxed.

Didn't get a BFP, but I figure I'll do it again here in Cycle #2. Can't hurt :-)

VJONES1985 · 21/08/2013 15:25

I don't need a wee after dtd, I must admit. Deffo doing the legs in the air thing though :)
