People who test negative on home tests

I see some of you on here saying your home tests always came out negative even when a baby popped out later!

I'm TTC, about 8 days past due at this point and have had intermittent spotting when my period should have been. The tests are negative, negative, negative.

I don't know what to do besides keep taking a test every day! But we have some travel planned and need to know if I'm pregnant so we can avoid high malaria risk areas.

If you tested neg but were pregnant, what did you do? Did you just eventually accept it after several missed periods?

I went to a private clinic to get a blood test but they said that it wouldn't be accurate until 10 days after my missed period so I didn't want to pay 90 quid for a test that might be wrong.

In need of some words of wisdom!

It's quite rare to be pregnant but to get negative tests after AF was due... the tests are 99% accurate. It could just be that you did not ovulate or ovulated later this month.

So are you not taking malaria tablets? Perhaps you could ask the GP for a blood test just to be sure, so you can travel safely.

I'd second the above (Blueamber always seems to know what she's talking about!) - ask for a blood test at the doctors to be sure. I'd be surprised if you are pg though; like Blueamber says, it's pretty rare to be pg and still get negative tests as that basically means your HCG levels aren't detectable - either extremely low or that you don't metabolise it into your urine. Are you sure you ovulated when you think you did?

I'm surprised the clinic said a private blood test wouldn't be accurate until then. IVF clinics test at 14-16dpo usually.

blueamber RaRaZ thanks for the advice! Maybe the pregnancy is just wishful thinking. I don't know for certain if I ovulated, I don't chart temps though I did have the cervical mucus. So if I ovulated later my period would just be late, but I'm not getting pre-menstrual cramps like I always do. That's why I'm so confused!

eurochick I know, everything I read online said that blood tests can detect way before home urine tests. But I figured either she was right and I should wait, or she was wrong and I should go elsewhere as that would make me pretty untrustworthy of that doctor!

OP, I have never had a HPT give a negative that turned out to be positive later, if I tested on the day my period was due. If anything, they are super sensitive and will show a faint line even days earlier.

Just order some pregnancy test sticks off eBay. Cheap as chips and you can test to your heart's content.

Do you have regular periods?

CursiveLetters · 06/08/2013 11:08

I guess I'm skeptical because I was pregnant before (had an early miscarriage) and I did have two negative tests after my period should have been due before I got positive - after the positive they were all positive.

I have had regular periods for the last few months, but before that was my miscarriage so can't say I have a long history of regular. The spotting I've experienced this go round is very similar to the spotting I had before.
