Hi there,

Like many of you, my husband and I have been TTC for what feels like quite a while (came off the pill last Oct, started trying 'properly' in Jan) but nothing has happened yet.

Was really hopeful this month but today got my P.

So, I'm toying with the idea of paying for early tests to put my mind at ease and was wondering whether other people have done this? Or think it's a good or bad idea?

Any comments would be appreciated

A GP won't usually test until you have been trying for a year, if you are under 35.

Around 80% of people will conceive within a year. You're not there yet, and time is on your side, so in your shoes, I would keep trying until the end of the year, and then go down the testing road. Paying privately for tests could work out expensive. The standard NHS tests are: two lots of blood tests for you (which may need to be repeated if mistimed), 2 SAs for your husband, an ultrasound for you and a HSG to check your tubes are clear. Some drs will also want to do an exploratory operation called a laproscopy too. These will all add up. My advice would be to save your money in case you do need assisted conception and spend it on this instead, but you are more likely than not to hit the jackpot in the next few months.

Don't worry, it can take up a year. Testing would be too soon now. I'm not sure how you're doing things, but just try and make sure you're dtd around the right time and don't smoke, don't drink much alcohol and have a good diet.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and thank for got the advice. I'll wait a little longer before we go for tests. Hopefully it will happen soon!

Good luck!

Make a mental note that testing is "parked" until January, as this will help you stop thinking about it. Have lots of sex, make sure you're both eating well not drinking much and perhaps take a supplement. Also, think about familiarising yourself with your cycle - not necessarily full on tracking at first, but start with general awareness, especially if you're a bit irregular.

Thanks Meditrina! The "parking" of testing is a good idea.
