Hi. I am going slightly mad and would really appreciate any thoughts.

I am pretty sure that AF is due around about Wednesday, but my cycles have been a wee bit erratic ever since DS2 was born 17 mths ago. I have sore boobs and a spotty chin just like I get before AF, but for the last few days I felt a bit funny and lightheaded so decided to test yesterday. You will think I am mad for the amount DP and I have spent on tests, but here are the results I have had.

Yesterday:
Predictor - positive
Tesco digital - positive
Tesco digital - negative
Clearblue (non-digital) - negative

Today:
Clearblue (non-digital) - negative

I am so annoyed with myself for doing the second digital test yesterday, but you know what it's like. I am going a bit round the twist now. What do you think?

I'm a bit confused myself !

Although I believe that you can have a false negative test but not a false positive . Best to wait for better advice though

BamBam21 · 29/07/2013 06:35

Thanks for replying Jemma.

Do you mean that you are confused because you are in the same boat, or just confused by my long list of tests?!Grin

I am clinging to the belief that you can't get a false positive, but then I search around here and find people saying that you can, and I just feel confused. I have got a low-down crampy feeling this morning in my tummy, and I think that either my period is going to dramatically start, or it's just everything shifting into place!Grin Also, I will be going out later probably and will get some First Response. as the consensus from what I have read is that they are the best, and that also pink line tests are generally more accurate than blue line or digital ones.

I'm confused because of all the tests ! Grin

All I can say is either wait a little longer before testing or get the doc to test maybe ?
Good luck

phantomhairpuller · 29/07/2013 06:50

As fat as I know you can't get a false positive.

So, congratulations!! Grin

Bugsylugs · 29/07/2013 06:52

Wait a bit longer. Do you always use your first wee of the day where levels are more concentrated? Maybe a chemical pregnancy if you have done the above.

BamBam21 · 29/07/2013 07:08

Thank you phantom - I am clinging to that hope!Smile

Bugsy - I used first pee of the day for the Predictor test yesterday, but didn't do the positive digital one until about lunchtime. Used first pee this morning but negative. I wondered about the chemical pregnancy thing, but surely that wouldn't happen between 12pm and 3pm yesterday - it would surely take longer for the hormone to disappear?Confused

It doesn't help that my cycle has been a wee bit irregular recently, so my period could be due anytime between now and next Monday. I so want to get the positives coming up again.

Bugsylugs may well be onto something up there^! Did you get all excited and think "ooh I'll have a drink so th'd I can test some more, just to make sure"?

If so, you may have diluted the hcg in your urine beyond the sensitivity of the test.

Statistically speaking, I'd be very surprised if there isn't a pregnancy, as you've had more than one positive test.

However, things are very finely balanced at this early stage and the reason for the subsequent negative tests could be:

A) diluting effect, as above.
B) different brands with slightly different sensitivity to hcg
C) falling hcg levels

If it is C), I am really sorry, I have been through it myself. It's such a disappointment; I kept berating myself for testing too early as everything resolved naturally and painlessly shortly afterwards.

If you can bear it, the best plan is to not test today, but use tomorrow's first wee, before you have a chance to dilute it with your morning cup of tea! In an establishing pregnancy hcg levels rise quite fast, so the tests will have a better chance then.

BamBam21 · 29/07/2013 07:54

I didn't drink loads to make myself pee mummy but maybe as it must be very early days then the levels just weren't high enough later in the day. Don't know why this morning would be negative though. I so want it to be positive, but I am feeling pretty uncomfortable and feel sure that AF isn't far away. It's so disappointing, but I will try to hang in until if and when AF shows up. It's not over 'til the red witch sings!

I'm afraid this is one of the reasons why testing early is not reliable. It may be that you are pregnant and the later tests you age used are just not sensitive enough/your HCG levels were diluted, or you may have had a chemical pregnancy that was only just picked up on by the first tests.

I had a CP in February, I had a positive one day (12 dpo), then a negative the next on the same brand of test. My period turned up two days after.

You should try to wait until at least Wednesday before testing again. Your HCG levels double everyday so by Wednesday you should get an accurate answer.

Just as an aside, the digital tests are not the most sensitive - Superdrug own brand and First Response Early Response are the most sensitive, along with many Internet cheapies. You need something measuring 10miu, whereas most of the digitals are 25miu.

Predictor tests give false positives a lot just google the reviews haven't heard of a problem with Tescos though

I think Clearblue are less sensitive than most cheap tests. If you've still got the packets they should say on them? If wait a few days and then test again, although in very impatient and would struggle!

BamBam21 · 29/07/2013 11:36

Hi. Thank you everyone. I just don't know what to think really. I have been to the shops and bought some First Response, did one, and of course BFN. I feel like AF could be here any second, but no trace when I go to the loo. I will just have to hold on and wait and see I suppose, but I am getting more and more doubtful. It's just sad as this time yesterday DP and I were over the moon.Sad

BamBam21 · 29/07/2013 16:57

Okay everyone, thank you so much for replying to this thread and holding my hand, but it looks like AF is now making an appearance, so it's all over. Really gutted.Sad

Thanks again. xx
