What does spotting before AF mean?

I'm still breastfeeding 15 mo DS, my periods came back at 9 months and have been a fairly regular 27-28 day cycle. Lately however I have noticed that I am spotting for about 5 days before af starts and am now panicking. What does this mean? Does it indicate some kind of problem like low progesterone levels?
As I'm 34 and thinking about TTC no 2 I'm wondering if this means I might need help..

TIA for any advice/ info!

I have had about a week of spotting before AF for years. When I didn't get it I knew I was pregnant. It made no difference to me

Thanks SorryMyLollipop that's interesting, hopefully it doesn't mean anything too problematic then!

Thanks Katatonic, I've searched and read some of those threads now!
Sorry about your miscarriage. It does sound to me as if there is a hormonal element at play re the spotting, but one that can probably be treated if need be.

Hi, my sister has had this and has recently been told she is producing extra eggs. Can't remember name of the condition though. She has been prescribe the pill to regulate it all.

I would see if you can get a gynaecology appt.

I always spot for a couple of days before AF and for me it's just a helpful indicator than AF is on its way
