Hello. I'm looking to see if anyone gave up drinking whilst ttc and got a bfp? I find ttc really stressful so a glass of wine kind of gets me through it. But willing to give it up if people really think it makes a difference. Experiences please!

A glass of wine is fine, a bottle of wine not best idea Grin

I did and as we were trying for 16 months I couldn't have given up alcohol for that long. I did cut down as was on slimming world and used to many syns anyway. If I had a big night out I would test first to make sure I wasn't. I had a couple of glasses of wine the weekend before I found out I was pregnant.
I know loads of people who conceived while really drunk and their babies have turned out fine.

fedupofrainydays · 23/06/2013 15:43

I have a glass or two of wine most nights after work. But not a bottle a night... Yet! Wouldn't drink much more unless it was a big night out, wedding or party.

Some research says give up all together but I find the idea of giving up something you really enjoy making the whole ttc process even harder - partic if takes a long time!

I didn't give up but I didn't drink that much when TTC anyway. I think it helped when it took a long time to conceive! Ironically I'd pretty much stopped drinking but drank more when we were on holiday - that's the week I conceived!

I was going to say its not going to do much harm but if you're drinking every day cutting down probably isn't a bad idea. Couple of alcohol free days a week helps your liver!

eurozammo · 23/06/2013 18:43

I think everything in moderation is the way forward. We've been ttc for 2.5 years. Without a drink in all that time, I would have gone a bit stir crazy.

RaspberrySnowCone · 23/06/2013 18:47

I haven't given up, we don't drink a huge amount anyway, a glass or two in the week and probably the same on the weekend is plenty for us. If you are on a bottle a night then it's probably time to cut down. If you cut out everything you like you'll be even more stressed in the long run, especially if it takes a while.

eurozammo · 23/06/2013 18:57

BTW, I did go entirely alcohol and caffeine-free at some point in those two and a half years and it made zero difference.

theborrower · 23/06/2013 22:02

I had a drink when I had my period - only a few - because I was clearly not pregnant, but abstained again until next period.

scaevola · 24/06/2013 12:56

Well, I think one particular night out on the lash may have definitely led to one conception Blush

More seriously though, drinking in moderation (as someone pointed out, by the glass not the bottle; and not every day) Is unlikely to make a difference one way or the other. But drinking as you stress release can become unhealthy - are there other things you can do to unwind?

fedupofrainydays · 24/06/2013 13:55

Yeah - I've starter exercise again. And have really cut down on the booze anyway. I've had two pregnancies before, both when I wasn't aware i was pregnant and it was over christmas and Ny party time and the other over a boozy weeekend away. I'm all about the moderation now. Not giving up but having a lot less (not that it was much anyway!) and def now not every day.

I gave up whilst ttc, tbh I find it easier just to give up, rather than cut-down, because I'm the kind of drinker who if I have a glass of wine I get the taste for it and want another! I did conceive quickly, though obviously have no idea if the lack of alcohol helped.
