Have you changed your diet/habits whilst TTC

Sorry - not sure if I'm being a bit daft. Just planning to start TTC dc2. And reminding myself about all the pregnancy behaviour advice - washing fruit and veg, avoiding cat poo, no alcohol etc. Are you doing this whilst TTC? I read somewhere that toxoplasma ( the bug carried in soil and cat poo) can be a risk if contracted up to 3 months before conception so seems to make sense to try and be more careful but not sure if I'm being overcautious?? Not sure I even thought about it first time around Smile

I've cut back on caffeine, I barely drink alcohol anyway. I'm trying to eat healthily but my diet isn't too bad so to be honest I've just carried on as normal.

I'm still taking my turn cleaning out the cats litter tray but I use disposable gloves and make sure I wash my hands with antibacterial soap afterwards. I'm looking forward to not having to do it when I'm pregnant though. The bloody cats refuse to go outside so they only ever 'go' in the litter tray and it needs cleaning out every day or to although I keep telling them it's fine to go in the snobby neighbor's garden

Hi madratlady fortunately our cat does go outside but she has some health problems and occasionally has an accident - which I'm finding quite stressful!! But am using gloves and washing well afterwards as you say. I always wash fruit before eating it anyway, veg not so much as its mostly cooked - but have been recently just in case! Suspect dh thinks washing the bagged salad is a bit unnecessary though!

Organic food
Cut back on booze
Decaf tea and coffee
No sweeteners
Fizzy drink only once a week, rest of the time water
Green tea once a day
OH has completely cut out booze

Willing to try anything after 20 months.

I still clean out the cats' tray every other day without gloves but always wash my hands. So that hasn't changed since before TTC... Only drink 2 cups of tea a day max; rarely fizzy drinks; don't like green tea (it does have almost as much caffeine as regular tea, btw). Taking conception vitamins, very boring after 15 months, but exciting having bright yellow wee every morning...

I am conscious of how much alcohol I drink and rarely have more than 3 drinks even on a "big night out" and try to avoid it the rest of the time, but then I've been a lightweight for ages so...

Personally don't believe that diet changes will make more than a tiny change in my chances of conceiving but I do try to have a balanced diet. For me after 15m of TTC I couldn't cope without some nice food and drink every now and then :-)

Madratlady · 22/03/2013 00:37

Are sweeteners and fizzy drinks a bad thing for women TTC then?

I drink diet coke occasionally and diet energy drinks when I work nights.

onceipopicantstop · 22/03/2013 08:03

Don't think I cut out sweeteners before. Why is that recommended - is it just that they're artificial? I've been thinking about my diet in terms of if I had conceived I suppose - so in that period before doing a preg test if I was not following the advice I could cause harm (if that makes sense?). Hadn't really thought about changing diet to increase my chances in the first place! First time round we conceived very quickly but obviously no guarantees this time will be the same. Especially as I'm 3 stone heavier and nearing 40!

onceipop nearing 40 and 3 stone heavier, are you me? I have one DS and didn't change my diet while ttc, although we both stopped smoking 6 months before only lightweight social smokers Was very good once pg, but before? Meh! Naughty vamos!

onceipopicantstop · 22/03/2013 08:43

Am a bit concerned that the 3 stone heavier may be an issue!! Have been trying to shift it for 3 years!

I'm also around 3 stones overweight and will be 40 in November. We've been TTC for 5 months.

I've given up losing weight but I am trying to follow my GP's advice in being more active. I'm also taking vitamins and folic acid, have decaf tea and coffee and desperately trying to give up diet fizzy drinks.

I'd also like to find out why sweetners are bad when TTC?

Madratlady · 22/03/2013 14:07

London if you are more active and avoid junk food you might well find you lose some weight anyway

jazzcat28 · 22/03/2013 14:24

I've been losing weight on WW since January (18lb down, many more to go!) and DH & I have been taking pregnacare for couples trying to conceive since start of Feb. Came off pill 1st March, still waiting for AF to arrive then we're going to do the just shagging approach. I do have OPKs but trying to avoid using them yet.

Interesting to hear about possible cat poo risk before being pg. Might have to ask DH to step up to his fatherly duties earlier than I thought Grin

Haven't changed my food choices to avoid the high risk foods like shellfish, pate, wine yet other than doing WW. Have cut down big time on alcohol but that's mainly due to trying to lose weight.
