Using an OPK as a pregnancy test

I heard this was possible so at 10dpo I've just used a clear blue digital OPK and I haven't got a smiley face - does anyone know if that means I'm out this cycle? I heard OPKs are more sensitive than pregnancy tests but as the two hormones are similar they should be able to pick up pg earlier?

The smileys only work if the test line is the same or darker than the control line. At 10dpo a + probably wouldnt be that strong.

Can you get a proper test?

Thanks I'm planning to do a proper test tomorrow at 11dpo as soon as I wake up, but I heard OPK's can pick up a pregnancy sooner so thought I'd give it a shot! Now not sure whether to give up hope or not based on the OPK not being positive. Argh. At least it's softening the blow of a clear negative tomorrow I guess!

I think opks with the two lines may pick it up but the smileys only work on the basis of a strong positive iyswim.

If you take the test apart can you see the test and control lines?

Well stupidly I threw it in the bathroom bin, then thought of that and dug it out (the things ttc drives me to). Anyway I'm just not sure I pulled out the right one, but the one I pulled out had two lines, the one closest to the end you pee on was fainter but still clearly there. However having done my rooting through bins and line analysis, am not actually sure what the hell that means?! Is it a faint positive?

I will def drive myself crazy with ttc!

at that early on you wont get a smiley cos it takes a strong definate line to trigger one.

opks pick up hcg cos hcg and lh (which opks pick up) have very similar molecule structures... pregnancy tests are made to specificly detect the hcg only, hence why pregnancy tests dont pick up lh.
why they dont make opks the same i dont know :/

i got a smiley face at 4 1/2 weeks x

By the way it's only me using the bathroom bin in case you think I'm that disgusting I'm examining other people's pee sticks, I just meant it could have been an older one of mine earlier in the cycle. Think it was the right one though!

Thanks honey when did you get your BFP, how many days past ovulation? Or do you mean your smiley face was a preg test rather than an OPK? Congrats I remember seeing you on other threads I think when you were ttc. I won't give up hope then for a BFP and will step AWAY from the bathroom bin!! Grin

Grin yeah i mean as a preg test ... it happened with dd and i was fascinated about it ( im autistic and really good at biology) so i did my research... i got my bfp on an internet cheapie at 14dpo n same time got a cb digi bfp saying 1-2 weeks (since conception) dont give up hope it was a complete surprise for me i honestly didnt expect it cos i tested at 12 dpo and it was bfn x

Please help I'm going out of my mind,,I had a clear stretchy mucus on the 26th of Nov later that night I used opk to see if I was ovulating but did not get a smiley face so I left it on the 3th of Dec I had cramps like I was going to have periods then the next day I saw blood along with my discharge n it lasted a couple of hours n ma periods were not even due I'm only expecting them on the 13 th could I be pregnant?

I found out i was pregnant when i got a static smiley face every day for 6 days, when i was testing for ovulation. I thought it was really wierd, but id heard OPK could pick up HCG, so i did a HPT just in case and bingo got a 'pregnant 2-3' on the clear blue digital pregnancy test. I was gobsmacked! Lol. Now 12 + 4 and recently had my first scan, all fine :)

Hi Ladies,

I know this is an old post but wanted to say that I got a very strong 2nd line on my opk 11 dpo then the next morning it was a bit lighter but I did a CB pregnancy test and it is positive :-). There really is something in those op that does pick up pregnancy hormones xx

I'm 26 days after my miscarriage, I've tested with pregancy tests and opk tests from the day after it happened, the pregancy tests are really really positive, but the opk tests are always strong . Any one have any idea?

Anyone know why I got a solid smiley yesterday with one test pack, and then today I tested with another test pack and got a circle?
