Do progesterone vaginal suppositories delay periods?

Hi everyone,

After 2 mcs in the last year (last one in Nov 2012), I am now using one progesterone vaginal suppository a day (Susten 200) for the last two weeks of the cycle.

AF was due yesterday -I am normally bang on time, with a couple of days of spotting before the real stuff starts. So far, nothing at all. So got my hopes up & tested this morning and got a BFN.

So I'm wondering if it's the Susten that is delaying my period (I literally haven't had a late period in years). I've read the leaflet and it says that it may make your cycles shorter, no longer. But having a look on the internet, it looks like some people have experienced a delay. Gah!

If so, should I stop taking it? Or is there a chance I'm actually pregnant and I could risk mc again?

Thanks ladies!

By the way, I realise that the most sensible thing would be to ask my gyno but for a number of reasons I can't see her for another week & this is doing my head in so any hindsights will be so appreciated!!

xx

P.S. As if a 2WW wasn't long enough!! Confused

Isnt it the drop in progesterone that signals your period to start? It would therefore make sense that the suppositories may delay things.

I know during the failed IVF cycles that my period only started when I'd stopped taking the drugs, but I was on something else in addition to the progesterone so not sure which was responsible for delaying things.

Also, how sure ar you of when you ovulated? Could it have been later than you thought?

I think it can delay your period for the reasons above stated by HDee. My period started late too after stopping progesterone after a failed ivf cycle. I think before you stop it you should perhaps take a pregnancy test. Good luck.

Hi HDee,

Thanks for getting back to me!!

Yeah, I read that some people didn't get a period until the stopped taking it. However, these 'testimonials' were from a few years ago & it seems strange that on the leaflet it mentions that Susten may shorten periods but not make them longer?

I think I had (for the first time of my life) some ovulation spotting around the 10th of Jan. I live in a pretty remote area and getting hold of OPKs is not easy so can't be 100% sure.

I am in two minds about stopping taking it to let my body go back to normal & keep on taking it for another few days, test again and then see. The problem is that I'm getting my hopes up & I am terrified of another disappointment!

Mmmh... just checked and the tests I used in UK detected 10 miu/ml HCG .

The ones I got here are 20 miu/ml HCG - but surely they should still detect preg if I'm one day late?

Thanks Solars - Ok, I'm going to wait a couple of days, take a test and if it's negative stop taking them!
