I was prescribed this by one gp to help regulate ovulation but changed practice and new GP wont prescribe it. She is an older gp and a real bitch - told me that ds had viral.. ended up bacterial tonsilitis. THen a few months later same - ended up scarlet fever AND again which was tonisilitis.. sorry tangent.

Metformin DID help regulate my cycle tho whilst i was taking it. Take it you have PCOS or PCOD

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies. I was given metformin late last year as since having dd have been diagnosed with PCOS and only having approx 1 period a year. I took the first lot of tablets and due to looking after my dd who was at nursery and the terrible nausea(sp) that came with it decided to stop until this year when my dd was at school. I was 4 stone overweight as well and have now lost 3 stone with a stone to go in the hope this would help regulate cycle. I am due to go back to consultant in June and i feel he will put me back on the metformin, i have two friends with PCOS who have conceived on clomid within a couple of months but don't know much about metformin success, hence the post.

My dh is on metformin for blood pressure i think or it could be cholesteral so why would it help you to conceive, probably a silly question I know.

CHUNKYMUNKEY · 12/04/2006 21:29

Hi tegan, I think metformin is also prescribed for diabetes, to do with blood suger levels and also for PCOS as some women have higher blood suger levels.

I didn't know you got nausea too, well done on the weight loss, you should really be svletemonkey now. My consultant has just prescribed me both clomid and metformin to boost ovulation. My cycles are fairly regularly though but someitme I don't ovulate anyway. I have a very mild signs of pcos too.

Ah ha thats it then dh is diabetic too (the list goes on) his perscriptions are a nightmare and the pharmacist is on first name terms with me now.

if you go onto to www.fertilityfriend.co.uk
look under sharing, you can check the charts - pregnancy and ovulation etc of women who have similar medications.
You may have to join but it's free :)
I found that sort of thing helpful

I was on metformin for pcos before conceiving ds. It worked v quickly for me and I lost weight rapidly (not sure how much, about a dress size in a month or so). It didn't make me feel sick, but did make me feel v lethargic in the first couple of weeks.

otoh it brought my periods back in one month (having had no periods for 9 months since coming off the Pill) and I conceived ds two weeks later Smile.
