Hi, I will have my first fertility appointment in two weeks. I have PCOS. I'm thinking that they will start me on some sort of ovulating inducing drugs but will I have to get a laparoscopy or the dye thing (can't remember the name of it) before they will agree to start me in treatment! I can't face another waiting list!!

Thank you for replying, yeah we have had the bloods and SA done so at least they are out of the way! I'm just so impatient to start treatment, it seems like every step takes ages!

hello. hsg will most likely be next, lap is a lot more invasive. i had to have chlamydia test before i could book hsg.

Christelle2207 · 29/11/2012 14:34

it took me 5 months between first app and actually seeing the cons. and getting clomid. v frustrating I know.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/11/2012 14:36

They will probably want to repeat the tests you've already had done. Having up to date results is vitally important.

You won't need to have either a lap or a dye test before they start further treatment. Also ovarian diathermy is a better optuion for PCOSers than just laparoscopic type surgery anyway (lap is usually done if endometriosis is suspected). HSG is a tubal x-ray where dye is used and you could have one of those done instead of having a lap operation.

BTW if you are given clomid you should be monitored whilst on it as it is quite powerful stuff.

Hi wonkywilly I've got PCOS and just got my first prescription for clomid so wanted to let you know how it worked for me. I had my first hospital app, then they made me have blood tests for HIV and some other standard things, plus DH, then I had an ultrasound. Then I had to call them on my 1st day of AF and book in for a HyCoSy scan (I think it's like a HSG scan but gentler/no x-ray). The liquid seemed to go through my tubes so they gave me a clomid prescription on the spot and I can start on day 1 of whichever cycle I'm ready to start on. I might wait until Feb as you have to be monitored on clomid as attila says, and I'm worried the hospital will be closed over xmas/new years and then I have a 2 week holiday at the end of Jan. That makes me sound more patient than I am about it all!

Anyway, this all happened quite quickly - my first hospital app was 13th November! Of course it would have taken longer if AF didn't come for a while as they would only do the HyCoSy after AF and you can't have sex in between. I think they do have to check your tubes before clomid to make sure they don't look blocked. Do you have AF quite regularly?

Merida · 29/11/2012 16:16

My HSG came back clear so they sent us away for a year to keep trying. One year later we were given Clomid.

DS has just gone six months :)

WonkyWilly · 29/11/2012 16:22

Christelle 5 months oh my god, I'm after waiting over 6 months for this first appointment, I think I need to work on my lack of patience.....it seems long its going to be a long journey!!

Charlotte my AF was really really irregular at one stage over 4 months between cycles but I lost three stone and went for acupuncture and that has brought it to a 38 to 48 day cycle!

WonkyWilly · 29/11/2012 16:25

Aah Merida....congrats though if they send me away to try again for a year I will chain myself to the consultants desk until they give me treatment!

I am presuming this would all be a lot quicker if I went private.....it's just so so expensive!

Hi hun thought I would comment about my experience so far. I was diagnosed with pcos around a year ago and was firstly put on metformin three times a day. This was too strong for me and my gyno put it down to twice a day. Next I was sent to check my tubes where clear and oh had his sperm tested which came back all normal . I was then given clomid and im currently on cycle 2 with clomid. It did take a while put they have to do bloods to make sure metformin is
working ect. Good luck with it and fx for us both xx

Charlotte321 · 29/11/2012 16:49

I wonder why some people are told to go away and keep trying and others given clomid sooner? I'm NHS too.

Good work bringing your cycle down wonky! I think that all helps. I did hope I could beat my PCOS and get myself ovulating naturally but not sure that will happen without clomid. Do you know if you ovulate by the way?

Charlotte321 · 29/11/2012 16:50

ps loved your story merida gives me hope, congrats Smile

Stephy30 · 29/11/2012 16:52

I think its postcode lottery. Some ladies on here have scans while on clomid. Ive asked my gyno about this and he states thats not available x

WonkyWilly · 29/11/2012 16:55

Charlotte my gp thinks I'm not ovulating, we have been trying two years now (really trying every second night I never want to see a penis again if I ever get bfp) so I think if I had been ovulating we surely would have caught it! Though my gp came to that conclusion after low progesterone from day 21 bloods but considering my long cycles I don't really know how accurate day 21 can be for me!
Stephy good luck with the clomid!

I still need to loose two more stone so I'm wondering if that may help regarding ovulation!

Charlotte321 · 29/11/2012 16:56

How are you doing with the clomid stephy? Are you able to monitor yourself at all - looking for ovulation signs etc? Good luck x

WonkyWilly · 29/11/2012 16:56

Stephy it is disgraceful that some ladies don't get scans while on clomid...I would imagine that scans are essential?!

I started my first round of clomid on the 30th nov last year and I am now 38 + 3 weeks.

I too have PCOS. We has our first appointment in sept and I had to do he dye in the tubes test first and it was all clear. Clomid was great for me! Good luck

Stephy30 · 29/11/2012 16:59

Yes I would think so too wonky.
Charlotte im doing ok on clomid im a little sensative with oh at times lol.ive tried to stay calm about it and gonna use ov tests this month to help x are you on it too x

Charlotte321 · 29/11/2012 17:01

I've heard losing weight helps kickstart ovulation! Sounds silly but I was sad I wasn't overweight when I heard that as I can't try that! Grin

Yeah my consultant didn't even bother with day 21 - I think because of my cycles and the fact that with PCOS it doesn't work as a test, as you either ovulate really late or not at all.

I know what you mean about the trying wonky - my acupuncturist asked me how my libido was the other day. What, you mean sex is meant to be fun? I'd forgotten that! Grin

Charlotte321 · 29/11/2012 17:03

ps stephy just got my first prescription but might have to wait until Feb as worried the hospital will be closed and I'm on hols in Jan. It's bad they're not monitoring you though but I hope it works for you x

Charlotte321 · 29/11/2012 17:03

Oh and pickle yay! How many cycles for you before it worked?

Christelle2207 · 29/11/2012 17:07

for me it partly took ages because i had one stupidly long cycle and i could only book in for hsg on day 1. I got scan on first month of clomid- they found one juicy follicle and i got bfp on tuesday!!!!

WonkyWilly · 29/11/2012 17:09

Charlotte I can give you a loan of a couple of stone if you want....trust me I have plenty to share Grin Wink oh and sex......fun??? Ooops I forgot about that lol
Oh pickle you must be so excited....how many rounds of clomid did it take?

OP posts:
WonkyWilly · 29/11/2012 17:11

Christelle I can just see that happening me my cycles just love to be awkward! Oh congrats on the bfp...that must be so exciting! Just imagine this Christmas knowing that next Christmas Santa will be visiting your little one!

I had 4 cycles and ovulated for 3 of them. I didn't have scans just bloods at 21 days.

Started with 50mg and ovulated, 2nd cycle didn't work so was upped to 100mg for the next 2 cycles.
