I got the results today and they were just handed out my the secretary and obviously not explained to me at all. I was told he needed to repeat it as the sample was too concentrated but the results were sperm count 30.33 and prog. Motility was 54%, is this good or bad I don't have a clue?

Did you ask for a printout? I can't quite tell from what you are put but motility sounds good to me. Did you get an overall count/volume/morphology list?

You really need the count and morphology to get a better idea of what is going.

It is also normal to have a second test a few months after for comparison.

Hi - you need at least four different % results for it to make sense to me. But the two figures you have given suggest that there's nothing out of the ordinary going on with the spermies. The four figures measure, as suggested above: overall count/volume, morphology, motility and viscosity (I think, from hazy memory). However, no point getting the analysis done unless you have someone professional to explain the results to you and discuss next steps. For example you could have a v good count but if the morphology is all wrong you won't get pg. And then you have to doublecheck what the professionals say! My GP suggested that our sperm count was fine when the figure was actually only 4% of decent wrigglers and the figure needed to be around 25% for natural conception. My partner gave up drinking and had weekly acupuncture for 3 months before retesting and that figure went from 4% to 54%!! I also fell instantly pregnant after 18 months of TTC (due in 6 weeks!). Worth waiting and trying healthy lifestyle for him before you retest (if any of the figures are a bit low)? Good luck. Hope you get there soon.

Thank you so much for the replys..........we are getting it done through the gp so maybe he doesnt understand, that's literally all the info that was written down. But he is getting tested again this Thursday so we will have the results for when I go to my first fertility appointment....so hopefully they will be able to shed some light on it!

This is why receptionists shouldn't be giving out info like this over the phone!
The analysis info you have mentions motility (how good they are at swimming) but you need to know about morphology (do they look normal).

motility is split into 4 sections - a. rapid (straight shooters that'll get you pregnant), b. non-linear (they swim but not straight!), c. Non-progressive (can't swim forwards) and d. Immotile. The progressive 'motility' the receptionist told you is likely to be a combination of a and b. 45% is pretty good.

Average count is 20-40 million so 30 is fair too.

Fwiw DH had a motility of 15% the first one (and they were all b.s!). He had treatment once they identified the cause and I'm now pregnant :)

Hi confused I recently had a similar experience with my GP who held his hands up and said he doesn't know how to read the result and was sat staring at dr. Google himself.

Get a printout of his result from the surgery - they shud happily give you that. Your numbers for count and motility look good. But like others have said you need to do further tests and also morphology and Antisperm antibodies (ASA) need to be tested.

Best to discuss with a fertility consultant so that you get a good picture of your fertility as a couple, including detailed discussion of sperm analysis results. Not really the territory of the GP though they should have an idea of what a low figure looks like. Sigh. Good luck - it's a tough time going through all the investigations so wishing you the v best.
