Have you been referred by your Dr?If so they will arrange for blood tests i cant remember fully now as it was last year, but i think they are called 21 day bloods and you have to go twice in yuor cycle, and thats to check all hormone levels and thyroid. With dh sperm analysis we had to go private as there was no embriologist in Staffs at the time he had just left,so we got our results the next day. Then they discuss your periods history, and ask what other methods you have tried regarding fertility eg temping personna etc and how often you do the deed, hth.Good luck.

It depends which clinic you mean!

We had several visits to the NHS assisted conception unit. 1st visit was just a chat and referrals for investigations. 2nd visit was the results from the investigations and referrals for more investigations. 3rd visit was results from investigations and final discussion. There was a really long wait for appointments and results, so I just kept phoning up and asking for cancellation appointments. We ended up saving ourselves about 6 months of waiting by doing this.

We then went to a private IVF clinic (as it had better success rates than the hospital where we had the investigations).

We took all the results from our GP/hospital tests (blood tests for hormones for me, HSG results for me, sperm tests for DH.

They re-did the sperm test while we were there, plus they did an internal ultrasound on me. They also weighed us both.

The results for DH's sperm test came back while we were talking to the consultant so he could decide whether IVF or ICSI was more appropriate.

This all happened in the Decemeber. We decided to wait until the following May to start our treatment, but in the March I found out I was pregnant naturally Grin. We now have a gorgeous dd.

Good luck!

It all depends on your clinic, and where you are in your cycle.

When we had our first fertility appointment in December of last year, it took a very long time - lots of form filling and history gathering. They did actually do an u/s scan that day, because I happened to be in on CD11 or 12, and they wanted to see if I was ovulating. They also booked us in for further tests (I had blood test and HSG x-ray, DH had a sperm count) - these were then done over the next couple of months (had to get the right times in the cycle).

As most of the tests have to happen at key times of your cycle (CD3 and 21 for bloods, pre-CD-10-ish for HSG x-ray), and your DH's sperm count can only be done after a specified period of abstinance (3-5 days depending on clinic), they probably won't do them there and then, but you shoudl come away with these things booked in, or instructions on how to arrange them when AF arrives.

Hope this helps!

Hugs,
Artoo.

Hi, I'm just off for my first fertility appt after GP referral next week so this has really helped! Have been trying for a year, the waiting is very frustrating.....

Piffle · 06/04/2006 16:56

I've got an appt in July...

Littlefish · 06/04/2006 18:05

Hi Piffle and Cazza - I hope things go well for you at your appointments. At least things are moving in the right direction for you now.

My dh and I made a point of always going out for lunch or dinner somewhere lovely on the day of our appointments. At least that way we always had something to look forward to, even if the news wasn't what we wanted!

I hope you get nothing but good news Smile

on my first visit to the clinic in september last year they already had my blood results and dh sperm analysis from the test the gp requested. they just discussed period length fertility signs eg ewcm . family history etc they sent me a questionnaire out in the mail to send to them before the first appointment. they needed another semen analysis as one is not good enough to go on as it can vary. we booked an appointment to bring this in . the day after the appointment i had a ultrasound so they could get a good base line of what your ovaries etc look like . i was found to have a cyst so needed further investigation by laperoscopy. This was in the November all was fine so i started Clomid in December. waiting to start my 5th cycle of this soon. Having folicle tracking and cd 21 bloods during these cycles
Hope this helps . I know that clinics vary a lot so your experience may be a little different to this but at least you will have an idea of what to expect.
Good luck to you all Grin

Hi im just wondering if anyone can give me any advice.
My husband had cancer and chemo and we were told there wasnt enough time to freeze sperm. We were also told we would never be able to have children after the chemo.
Once he was in remission we spoke to the consultant. He put us foward for ivf. A month after this i found out by some kind of miracle i was pregnant. I did miscarry week later unfortunately.
The hospital wrote back and said they would see us but we needed to book in the gp for appropriate tests first. My results all fine. Husband has low motility at 39% and a reasonable sperm count for what hes been through. Weve got an appointment next week but im dreading being told to go away and try naturally as its happened once. Hes 40 and im almost 40 and were frightened of his cancer returning. The consultant has stated it will come back eventually as its a type that is known to. I came off my pill in 2017 and we said we would see what happens but i never got caught.
Im just wondering if anyone has any tips on what to say or things that may help us. Really feel apprehensive about this as weve been trying since the miscarriage in December and arent having any luck.
