Sperm analysis, is this enough info?

Hiya,

I may be being paranoid as DP has been told he has 'normal' sperm by the doctor, but we have only been sent the results and they have not been explained.

Semen sample volume. 2.5ml (2-999)

After reading other comments I feel like this is missing certain info, such as ph? But I'm no doctor and maybe I'm misunderstanding the language.

It is poor practice to be informed like this; infact this should be done with both of you present as you can then ask questions. Who gave you these tests results - the GP surgery?. If that is the case I would complain to the practice manager.

How long have you been ttc for?. Such tests are actually better off being done under the supervision of the people at the subfertility unit; GPs do not have enough specialist knowledge to explain such results properly.

Also such tests should be repeated to ensure that there are no male factor problems.

We requested these results following advice from mumsnet. Dp rang the doctor to find out the results they said they are 'normal' and we should have sent a letter in the post saying pretty much the same. So we asked the reception lady to send the actual results and there they are. We both see separate surgeries and these results are going to be taken to my doctor ASAP

Is is possible for you both to be registered at the same practice?.

Its still poor practice to be informed of these results in such a manner becasue they have not been explained to you fully. Therefore you'd both be far better off having all your tests done at a subfertility unit. Also such tests more often than not have to be repeated; a single semen analysis is not fully conclusive.

But attila, these are normal results. The full report has been given as requested, but as it stands, there's nothing more for the original surgery to say.

Shiny, it's great that you have the formal report. pH isn't important. Speak to your GP, and they can refer you on to a fertility clinic if you fit the criteria (if you see what I mean!). And Attila is right, a secondary unit will repeat tests, including SA, but those results are reassuring

My DH and I are trying for a baby after his vasectomy reversal, I was told that the level of antibodies was important, the higher the antibodies the less likely you are to concieve (as the antibodies kill the sperm).
Hope this info is useful in some way. xx

Antibodies are only relevant if there has been damage to the testicles (accidental or surgical).

Those are completely normal results - trust me I'm a scientist!!

pH, time of specimen etc will all have been recorded but aren't relevant if the results are normal. pH is important if there are no sperm seen because it can give useful information about the components of the ejaculated liquid.
