Giving up drinking during TTC

Anyone done this? And have your OHs done it too?

If yes, please can you give us some tips? We've tried but everything seems to revolve around drinking!

This week I've drunk a large glass of wine with dinner on Weds, a large glass of wine with lunch on Thursday, then a small glass and 2 large glasses of wine and 2 shots of sambuca at a party last night.

Would you say that's too much?

I don't really drink, but it doesn't sound like youve drunk alot winkle, If you were drinking a couple of bottles a night then I would say cut down, but you're not. I personally don't think you should cut alcohol out completely whilst TTC, as TTC can take ages sometimes, and could leave you feeling resentful.. obviously when you get your bfp I will advise differently

I gave up drinking for 2 years while ttc. We found out that we had fertility issues and made many lifestyle changes in order to maximise our chances or either ttc or IVF working. DH gave up for 6 months and then I got pregnant.

I spoke to the doctor about this. Like you il tend to have a couple of glasses of wine a week. He said unless your drinking to excess there isn't really any need to give up completely.

I was glad about this, it's been 18 month of ttc and enjoy having a couple of glasses of wine! :)

I barely drink really - a small glass of wine once a week or so - but OH drinks a fair bit more than me, and I sometimes think it would be easier to TTC if he would cut down! His doctor has told him the amount he drinks is ok though and he is taking this as gospel :-)

My husband has cut back a lot esp as his sperm analysis showed his morphology showed as 1%. Hopefully we won't be waiting too much longer - we've been trying a year :(

Winkle sounds like your in the same position as me! Dh morphology was the same. He has started taking a vitamin thats meant to be good for morphology so hopefully that will do the trick, although we were told that it was unlikely to have any effect on fertility! :) we aren't pregnant yet tho!!!

winkle2 · 17/09/2012 08:47

What vitamin is he taking?

hi winkle and happilymarried am in similar situation to you both, low morphology and trying 15 months now. My DH is taking arginine, coQ10 and a regular male conception vitamin. The arginine and coQ10 are supposed to increase blood flow to the 'area' so hopefully improve the making of the sperm. Make sure it includes zinc as apparently they lose a lot when dtd... It's all a bit of an unknown as to whether it will do anything, but we'll be looking at IVF in 6 months, so want to do everything we can before then. Good luck!

oh, and with regards to drinking i read a study that said men can drink a fair bit without it having an effect, but women even drinking a few a week does impact. Having said that, ttc for years is bad enough without the odd glass of wine, and you can find plenty of other studies saying the opposite if you look! i think it's unlikely that's the reason if you have low morphology, so i wouldn't worry too much about that and take your pleasures where you want them and try and live as normal a life as you can while ttc.

It's called pycnogenol, I got it from holland and barrett. We have our first appointment at the fertility clinic in a couple of weeks so will go from there. Im feeling a little mor optimistic now we have an appointment at the clinic! :)

Thanks happily - I'm going to buy that from H&B

If it helps we've been Ttc for eight months with no sign of anything and we're both teetotal...
