conceiving while doing extended breastfeeding

Am still breastfeeding 3 year old, once or twice a day. We are slowly trying to get this feed down to one a day (its very hard work!)

We have been trying for 1.5 years and am getting desperate. I know that while breastfeeding you can have periods where no egg is realeased. But its has been 1.5 years now and surely i must have ovulated at some point over that time. I am getting worried that because of the elevated hormone for breastfeeding, which prohibits eggs being released im never ever going to get preganant untill i have completely stopped breastfeeding.

Please can someone give me postive stories of getting pregannt whilst extended breastfeeding.... I mean i cant be doing the deed wrong now!!!

My DSis has done it twice!
And her first preg was IVF - next two BF and they did it all by themselves.

DC3 conceived whilst BF DC2 (aged 13 months) twice a day. DC3 now 18 months.

Am sure lots more of these will come along.

Good luck.

Lots more stories, rather than DC for me, that is.

Don't know if it counts as extended but I got pg when I was bf my 15mo. My periods came back after 5 weeks though Sad so maybe that's got something to do with it.

I only know one other extended bf'er and she hasn't started trying yet so can't comment on anyone else. Good luck Smile

Am waiting for no.2 while still feeding no.1 (also 3), so don't worry, it can be done! Did take a bit longer to conceive this time around I think (at least it seemed to). Keep trying & good luck.

Thats sounds very positive, do you think if i went to the doctors they may do something or would they say you need to stop completely. Am beginning to think there is something wrong as first time we did exactly on day 14 of calender and conceived

Oh sorry, I don't know, but I don't see why you would need to stop bf to conceive (unless you wanted to). Don't worry about it so much and it'll happen!

ipswichwitch · 23/08/2012 22:27

We are ttc DC2, and I'm bf our 10mo DS. Ok, so it's not extended bf (yet, but I'm sure it will be as he ain't giving up the night feeds any time soon!), but my periods came back at about 5 months. Cycle is longer now though, no idea what effect that may have on conceiving

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 23/08/2012 23:39

My DSis BF through 2nd pregnancy and then fed both for another year before stopping with DC1.
She is now still BFing DC2 while preg so is poss. Good luck!

I was still bfing DD1 twice a day and conceived DD2 when she was 10 months old. I had only had my first postnatal period the month before. Continued breastfeeding DD1 for another 3 months.

HoratiaWinwood · 24/08/2012 17:38

My cycle was a different length and shape after DC1. Day 14 may be the wrong day for you now. I conceived DC2 whilst extBF DC1, on Day 9 or 10.

Unless you know how to work out if you are ovulating, you can't say for sure one way or another. Fertility Friend is very user friendly - I have an app on my phone - otherwise the Zita West book is v informative.

Fingers crossed this is just a matter of timing.

Pochemuchka · 24/08/2012 17:41

DC 2 and 3 both conceived while extended BFing. TTC DC2 was much more difficult than DC3 though (no idea why!)

Pochemuchka · 24/08/2012 17:42

Oh, I forgot to add that I wasn't having periods both times, either.

MammyToMany · 24/08/2012 17:45

I got pregnant whilst still feeding ds1 - he was 14 months old

I got pregnant with dc4 whilst still feeding ds3 - he was 11 months

MammyToMany · 24/08/2012 17:45

I wasnt having periods either.
