af after d&c- can anyone advise? (tmi warning!)

hi

I had a missed m/c at 15weeks on February 27th. I had to have a d&c the next day - after it I only bled that day, and nothing afterwards apart from some very light spotting a few days later. My midwife said they had probably got everything out at the time, hence no bleeding later.

Anyway, I got what I thought was af last Thursday - however, it only lasted the day, was reasonably heavy, bright red, ( I never get very heavy af) and was followed the next day by some spotting and hardly anything afterwards. I had felt crampy and as if af was coming before Thursday, but tbh wasn't expecting it for ages yet. The general consensus seems to be it takes 4-6 weeks for af to return after d&c. This was only 13 days. Is it just a case that everyone's different?

I was so relieved at the time but now I'm not so sure. Does anyone know if it could have been af, or just some 'leftover' bleeding from d&c? I'm so fed up with all this not knowing, I'm desperate to start ttc again asap. How can I work this out?

I'm sorry www but I really don't know, however I can tell you that I had similar thoughts with mine. I kept hearing the 4-6 week rule, I also had only been about 10 days without bleeding, and was still getting very, very faint positive test. Then I got all my very standard pre-menstrual feelings - boobs painful and spots. I was confused and wondering what my body was doing, but then I came on. I had a really af-like bleed for 5 days. It seemed so much like af but everywhere said it couldn't be....I was really confused, so decided it was the final loss of any products (but i don't know). About 16/17 days after that I ovulated and 28 days after that I had af, (my normal cycle length). Maybe they are wrong sometimes?

It seems to me that after a miscarriage is a complete unknown quantity.

Hi rubles,
thanks for replying....

I'll do ov tests over the next 2 weeks - then I should be able to work out if that was af, or just post d&c bleeding. It's such a pain. Just want to be in control of my own body again! I've been doing both ov and pg tests in the last week, both came up neg. At least I know what my body's not doing, I suppose.

You're right about m/c being an unknown quantity. I keep thinking that it's so common - so why aren't there more answers for us?

Hi WWW,
it could be either. I heard of women stop bleeding after a MC only to start again a week later. It could have been af but it seemed a bit short. Either way you should ov next, in about 2-4weeks although I'd be tempted to say 2. Followed by af............ or not as you are TTC. Good luck and I will keep an eye on all you on the TTC after MC thread til you get your BFPs and I will obv still post there.
Hope things turn out the way you want.
