Just started trying - any advice?

Hi ladies, new to mums net and new to trying.
Just started TTC a few months back and I really thought I was pregnant this month as last month my period started on 16th and this month it didn't appear till 27th. Gutted when it reared it's ugly head, guess since coming off pill in feb my periods still haven't settled down.
Any advice? :-)

You can go down the road of ov sticks, charting etc - but the best advice really is to have lots of sex. Start as soon as AF is over, then have sex every other day until next AF starts. That way there should be sperm waiting to greet the egg whenever you ovulate, as sperm can live a couple of days inside you.

Agree with lurcher, try to relax and have lots of sex.

It's so easy to get caught up in all the crazyness of TTC, but honestly that way madness lies [voice of experience] Grin

It may be worth getting a book/doing some reading on conception. I've noticed that some people can be shockingly ignorant about how it actually works. My DH was shocked to realise that you only get 1 chance per cycle!

Don't assume it will happen right away. It can take a perfectly healthy couple up to a year to conceive, so just try to relax (I know I keep saying that!)

The best advice I had was to have sex every day from day 4. It's not as much fun as it sounds!!

No need to do it every day throughout your cycle. Sperm can live up to 5 days (though in reality it's more like up to 72 hours). Like you say = knackering, particularly if you have stupidly long cycles like mine!

Every other day, or even every 3 days, through most of your cycle with a concentrated effort for every day around your most fertile days (if you know them) is the best course to take.

For about 4 to 6 months just have plenty of sex. Keep a record of when your periods happened but don't stress yourself out with any of this ttc science malarkey. If you are shagging three times a week then you have the best chances of conception and whenever you ovulate there ought to be some sperm hanging about waiting for the egg. If you have a rough idea of when you are ovulating then get an extra shag in for good measure. Read up a bit on signs of fertility so you can see when you are making fertile fanjo juice.

I found ovulation test strips to be very effective for me although I had some issues - and after mcs was wanting to get pregnant as soon as possible. Not that ov tests get you pregnant faster - it is the sex that gets you pregnant of course but it does ensure you catch the right time. I personally did not share all this ovulation update stuff with my partner as I though that might be counterproductive - I just used my special ways to persuade him that even more sex was a good plan that evening.

Advice from my GP who used to be an obstetrician:

  1. You can never have too much sex. Don't worry too much about conceiving dates, just make sure you do IT as often as possible. Very hard to get pregnant without it!

  2. Keep your BMI bang in middle of healthy. Too high or too low are bad for conceiving & as its one thing you can control, you might as well.

  3. Avoid getting totally plastered. Just because it's not ideal if you do happen to be pregnant & don't yet know. Although a few Wine certainly help with point one!!

Anyway, I'm 32 & it worked after 3 months for me (& DH had more action then he's ever had or ever will have at 5.30am :) ).

Also he said its like throwing darts at a dart board blindfolded, so some people hit bullseye straight away & others take longer but when everythings in working order, it really just boils down to luck & the number of throws!

I have friends who took 12 months + so I guess I wasn't going to start worrying until at least over a year. I think worry can kill all desire for the necessary sex ;)

Thanks for all the advice guys, really sweet of you to take the time to reply. I was getting very confused with trying to work out when ovulating etc, May my period started on the 16th and July it didn't start till 27th so I have no idea!

AF gone now so guess hubby is in for a good weekend lol x
