Regular periods but no ovulation detected?

TTC for last 7 months. I have been using the clear blue ovulation predictor for the last 3 months and have not detected any LH surges. Cycle is 28-30 days and I bleed for 6-7 days. Start testing on day 10 and continue for 10 days, testing first thing in the morning. Not sure what to think, I haven't been to doctors yet - I know that is probably what I should do at this point. I have one DS, took 6 months to conceive him. Any similar experiences or ideas what this might mean?

I'm in a similar situation - TTC for the last 12 months. I've been using the clear blue ovulation tests this month and can't detect any LH surges. I have no children so assume there must be a problem, and I guess the next step is going to the doctor -which I was going to do anyway because it's been a year.

From talking to friends, I've heard that the ovulation tests are more effective in the afternoon, as that's when the surge happens (although personally I don't think I could do it in the afternoon - I don't fancy waiting for 4 hrs to go to the loo, and hiding the sticks from my colleagues! Sounds like a bad farce) Other advice I've received is to urinate into a cup rather than directly onto the stick, as this makes it easier to control the amount and length of contact.

FantabulousFryingPan · 21/07/2012 12:25

Frustrating isn't it? And expensive! I think I'll give it one more month then head to the docs. Given the tests say they are 99% accurate I am inclined to believe I am not ovulating rather than I am testing at the wrong time of day. But having periods in normal way makes me think it can't be pcos so wondering what else could be going on?

IME OPKs are notoriously difficult to get accurate results. You may get a positive and ov 12hrs later which, if you're testing once a day, may miss the surge.

The only times I've had success with OPKs is when using them alongside temping and observing cervical fluid and if my other signs were indicating ov was imminent I would start testing regularly, maybe 2-3 times per day and not fmu. I bought cheap First Step or One Step ov tests from amazon (a few pounds for 20 tests). I would then see my temp rise when ov had occurred, so I could be sure I had ov'ed that cycle. Even when using this method I wouldn't always get a positive on an OPK.

Good luck!

I never used CBFM but the tests I used only worked from 10am - 4pm I think? I had to test at work. Could it be that you are testing at the wrong time of day for your tests? Mine specifically said not to do it first thing.

I used cheapy ones off the Internet which made me feel better about doing several a day!

miarosemum · 21/07/2012 19:35

you should never test first thing as the lh is not detected in your body that early, do it mid afternoon sometime, and dont worry about holding loads of urine in, they say just to not have a drink an hour before so your urine is slightly more concentrated

kittykatsforever · 21/07/2012 19:54

The cb ones do say you can use them in the morning but I have always used them at 5 ish when I get in from work and they seem to work fine, always has a + I try not to have a drink any later then 2 but I've never waited 4 hours, also you say you've been testing from day 10, perhaps you could try from day 6 next month just incase? You may just be missing it, my first month I had to use 2 packs as I was on the later outside of what was expected, 28-32 day cycle opk + days 17-19

FantabulousFryingPan · 21/07/2012 20:25

Thanks everyone. I was using it first thing in the morning as it said you had to not pee for 4 h beforehand and i drink loads of water at work.

I might have to start testing on an earlier day, but my period lasts 7 days so i thought starting at 10 days seemed about right.

Thing is, I do get other 'symptoms' at about the time I am expecting to ovulate, e.g. skin goes to pot and EWCM. But no positive on the test Sad.

I'll keep trying!

May just be the time of day then and if you can maybe hold off drinking such alot on those m few days and test in the afternoon, I don't think you'd need to cross your legs for 4 hours lol Wink
But if you get signs anyway dont worry to much if they don't work, your body may only have a low surge or short one that's easy to miss and go by EWCM etc

CaveMum · 22/07/2012 08:12

You should never take one sign in isolation as they can easily be misinterpreted.

Have you thought about charting your temperature? It can tell you when you are about to ovulate, but will tell you that it has happened. Charting over a few cycles might help you to establish a pattern of ovulation.

It's worth noting that some women have naturally high (or low) levels of LH and the tests cannot pick up on the subtle changes. They won't work for everyone.

Cass1177 · 27/09/2020 23:11

Hey ladies been using the clear blue advance monitor ... it kept saying high as I set it to do a test from 7am-1pm .. I was then told to test twice a day after so long of trying to conceive with no luck .. we’ll surprise I started testing evening eith the digital test clear blue also and got my surge .. my advice is ladies please test more than once a day .. this morning it was high by evening I was peak .. fertility clinic has also said some ladies only surge for around 4-7 hours ... so please try do 2 tests a day from day 6 it worked for me after months of not seeing that surge in the morning

Livingmagicallyagain · 28/09/2020 07:00

I ovulate on day 11 so it's possible you're missing the surge. I test at 10am and 6pm from day 7. I rely more on tracking CM and BBT though. Buy Toni Wechsler's book for the easiest and most comprehensive overview.

Ovulating earlier in your cycle isn't a problem, I've 3 DC and one more on the way, it just depends what your norm is. If you ovulate before day 9 it can be an issue but only BBT will tell you for sure.

MintGreenLife · 28/09/2020 10:54

@FantabulousFryingPan it might be a good idea to start charting BBT to confirm if you are ovulating :) I've been off the pill for 6 months now and so far I've only been able to pinpoint ovulation in one cycle and have only ever had one positive OPK. My cycles haven't been too irregular - 30 days, 37, 55 and 33, but only after the 55 day cycle did I have what I would call a normal period as the other's have been light, and that's the cycle I could confirm ovulation and a normal luteal phase, so suspect the other cycles were anovulatory. I also had EWCM for more than two weeks non stop last cycle and then a surprise AF while on honeymoon! I'm booked in for bloods at the GP and waiting for a referral for a scan at the mo x

I never get very dark opks after 6 months of testing am and early evening but this month (last week) I was tardy and tested late, like 11pm late and it was a actually dark, then slightly lighter again first thing. I am starting to think I basically do the surge at night... (I am a real night owl so that would be typical Grin)

Mistymonday · 28/09/2020 23:58

Great news OP! Smile

@FantabulousFryingPan oh my gosh, I didn't even notice 😂 It just popped up on my feed like it was a new thread! That's great news ☺️ X

Juno231 · 29/09/2020 11:07

@Cass1177 if you're struggling with OPKs I'd suggest temping alongside them.

Cass1177 · 29/09/2020 11:39

I do the temping but not getting really no signs :( so I was using the cbfm still only getting highs ,. Yet I bought a cbdm and got smily face 2 days in a row now no smiley face done get why the clear lie advanced monitor isn’t picking up yet the digital is :( I kinda no as cervix goes soft wen ovulating most time but not always ;?

Juno231 · 29/09/2020 12:17

@Cass1177 if temping isn't picking up on it then it might be the case that you're not ovulating? Do you have long or irregular cycles at all?

Indigoflower · 29/03/2021 19:22

Did you find out the reason you were having regular periods but not LH surge? I’m having a similar problem and I’m wondering if I’m not ovulating or just timing it wrong :(

Also, congrats for your pregnancy!! ❤️

MIW01 · 25/04/2021 22:14

Hello

I know this is an old thread but I have this issue too, my temps are also erratic but I think that's because of poor sleep quality. I've only seen a couple of really dark positive OPKs in over 2 years and I test at least twice a day, get EWCM. I've had blood tests that all suggest I'm ovulating (21 DAY progesterone level 28) and my cycles are regular.
