Strange request but any tips on how best to transport a sperm sample?!?

DH and I are currently in the process of being referred to our local fertility clinic and before we start we both have to have tests done.
DH has got A LOT of work on at the mo so can only get home on his lunch hour tomorrow to err give his sample but not take it to the clinic which is about an hour away.
This leaves me to take it and as I don't drive, I will be taking the bus!
Does anybody know the best (and most descreet) way of transporting it so A, I don't ruin the sample and B, nobody knows what I am carrying.

I dread to think what would happen if some poor little old lady sat next to me and the bus hits a pothole?!? messy

Please help

I worked on a hospital ward where the man was doing a sperm sample for the fertility clinic (completely unrelated to why he was in hospital) and his wife transported the sample in her cleavage to keep it warm.. not sure if that was the official transport advice they were given??

RightUpMyRue · 16/07/2012 20:57

Well, you won't be holding it in your palms will you! Grin

It'll be in a sample bottle, won't it? If you're worried about it spilling out of the sample bottle you can put it in a freezer bag.

I think I'd be tempted to get a cab if it's over an hours bus ride away. It has to be within two hours fresh doesn't it?

Angelyaz · 16/07/2012 21:02

I used to transport my donor's sperm samples under my (rather ample) cleavage. Kept it at body temp and also very discreet.

Priscillaqueenofdessert · 16/07/2012 21:12

Haha cherie I think that might be a bit noticeable!

rightup I think a freezer bag is definitely a good idea just in case. It's about 45/50 mins on the bus so i will be there well within the 2hr best before time, and a cab will be way to expensive.

Is it best kept warm then?

I kept mine in my bra too, covered with a scarf. I felt a bit daft though.

Can he not do it at the hospital. We have to get ours to the hospital within 30 min-hour. Any longer than that will affect the sample they said! X

AttilaTheMeerkat · 17/07/2012 07:28

The best thing to do here is for your DH to actually give his sample at the hospital's clinic. Carrying it for an hour may well render it unuseable for testing.

Also such tests often need to be repeated by the clinic in question.

I have taken a sperm sample in my handbag on the tube before with no problems. If you have a proper sample pot then nothing's going to leak out. I do live about half an hour away from the clinic though so it wasn't in my bag that long. One of the people on another thread I'm on regularly put the sample pot in a sock and then in her pocket to keep it warm.

Mechavivzilla · 19/07/2012 10:54

In a sample pot, in a freezer bag, in my armpit, while DH drove! :D

MildredH · 19/07/2012 10:58

I'm a dr and when I worked in GP the written advice we were given by the lab for men producing their SA samples was to carry it in their pockets to keep close to body temp. The cleavage idea is probably best!
Good luck x

It possibly depends on what they are testing for at this stage. If it's just a sperm count then timing might not be that critical, but if they are looking at sperm condition and mobility then it probably is. Ask the clinic for instructions that's the best bet.
My dh did both of his at the clinic.
Beth.

Thanks so much ladies. We had a change of plan and we actually sorted this all out today.
We managed to get DH out of work for a couple of hours so he drove and I went with the majority and carried it in my cleavage :)
It worked perfectly for keeping it at body temperature.
Thanks again
