confused about cycles

Can somebody explain to me, how you would get a shorter/longer cycle. Thank's.

They say you ovulate 14 days before your af so the difference is in the first half of your cycle. Which hormones are different to a 28 day and why I have no idea, sorry. (I failed that module in my biology a level!)

My af's are all over the place. It's been four months since my last one. When I was trying to get pregnant I was told my only shot was the pill. Sounded stupid but where all other fertility had failed, it worked. I took the pill for three months without stopping and then had an af. Two weeks after that the deed was done. That simple. Which I'd known that three years earlier. But my ds is 2 now.
