Can PCOS just suddenly appear?

Hi,
I'll give you a very brief history of me! Right tube removed when a teenager but ovary kept, failure to conceive many years later, tests done which showed that the other tube was blocked, 2 failed cycles of IVF then a couple of months later a miracle pregancy and my DS was born. After over a year of ttc#2 I have gone through all the rigmarole of scanning etc again and I have been diagnosed with PCOS. I am completely surprised at this as there was never any mention of it before. So, can it just suddenly happen? Or would I always have had it? I am now wondering if all the drugs from the IVF might have done something. I am currently waiting for a day 2 blood test so that I can start clomiphene (in Canada) but feel a bit perplexed at the diagnosis. Can it come and go?

Hi Jen,

I'm not sure if PCOS can suddenly appear but I know it can vary in severity of symptoms. For example in my late teens I got regular-ish periods although I had cysts on my ovaries but normal hormone levels, by the time I got to twenties the whole thing was haywire, when I lost weight I ovulated again. I shouldn't think the IVF would make you polycystic. Can you get a second opinion? It seems strange that you would suddenly turn polycystic overnight tbh. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks Mags. It's all a bit strange! Got my day 2 bloods tomorrow and then we'll see what to do next. The strangest thing is that when I conceived DS I was doing all the wrong things, overweight, drinking a lot (it was Christmas time ish), stressed etc. Now I am a runner and have lost 2 stone, eating really well and enjoying life in a new country with great weather. I'll keep you posted! :)
