Coming off mini pill

Can anybody tell me their experiences of coming off the mini pill please? Is it likely to be the same as coming off the combined pill?

I was fine coming off that to ttc dc1 but as they work in different ways are there more side effect / problems getting cycle back to normal coming off the mini pill? I've heard there can be...

Hey Sunny,

I came off the mini pill on the 19th April (so exactly 10 weeks ago now). I had no withdrawal symptoms/bleeding until I started with some heavy brown spotting exactly 8 weeks after coming off it that lasted 10 days. But I have no idea whether to count that as a period or not! It's very frustrating - I would like my 'proper' cycles to begin!

Sorry if not much help - but this is my experience to date! Hopefully someone will more insight will be along to help.

DiscoDomina · 28/06/2012 16:17

Everyone is different - i drove myself mad googling trying to second guess what my body would do. There were so many nightmare stories out there about periods not coming back for nearly a year after cerazette.

As it turns out i took my last pill 6th March had first bleed 25 days later, and another 25 days later i would say had full on heavy period like the old days! Got my BFP 24th May!!

Your body will do whatever it wants to i guess! Some suffer and take a while for their cycles to return to normal and others it's quite easy! All you can do is come off it and see what happens.

Good luck sunnysunny Smile

Thanks both. I know, I'm already getting a bit obsessed and I haven't even come off my pill yet! 2 wks to go...

Guess it's just a case of wait and see :)

Good luck to us all!

I came off mini pill and before I had a chance to have a period, I found out I was pregnant. Couldn't give docs accurate dates as had no idea when we conceived....so be warned - it can happen pretty quickly!!!!

brettgirl2 · 01/07/2012 12:09

I had the same experience as Holbie. Everyones different and of course people might blame the minipill when it would have taken ages anyway.

sunnysunnyshine · 01/07/2012 12:40

Congratulations holbea and Brett! Good to hear positive stories.

It happened straight away with dc1 but I was coming off the combined pill then and had heard there were more likely to be problems after the mini pill. I'm more hopeful now...

I've started spotting slightly but still got 2 weeks left til the end of the packet. Do you think this is any indication of my cycle being messed up and should I just stop taking them now? Or just carry on til the end of the packet?

Ive never had any spotting or periods while being on this pill (apart from bleeding due to the initial trauma of losing my dbro suddenly 8 months ago).

Or could the spotting not mean anything at all?

Hello

rosiegal · 28/11/2013 13:13

Hi all this is my experiece so far...... I stopped my mini pill (cerazette) 19th september but I didn't get a withdrawal bleed until 19th October and it was very very light for about 5 days. Paige I definitely experienced mood swings and had some weird pregnancy symptoms like dizziness, nausea, bloating and convinced myself I was actually pregnant, BFN unfortunately.
I've just had my first proper period 22nd November so while I was a bit disppointed to not be pregnant yet I'm seeing it as a positive that my body and hormones are settling down.

I’ve recently stopped my mini pill (cerelle), 3 weeks ago now. I’ve also had Tender boobs, headaches, cramps, backache and constipation but no sign of a bleed yet. Driving myself mad too and praying it won’t take a year. I wish you all the best Callenferguson14 and hope it happens quickly for you; some of the old posts say they conceived before even having a period.

Avocuddles · 06/11/2018 20:28

Hi! I came off cerelle at the end of May and almost six months down the line I still haven't had a proper period. Had one (very light) bleed around the end of September but nothing since and no BFP. I've had all of the symptoms you mentioned George91 off and on ever since stopping the pill which has been frustrating to say the least! Have spent a small fortune on pregnancy tests as have read about some people getting lucky before their AF resumed but doesn't look like I'm going to be one of those :( fingers crossed for something soon, my GP says they won't investigate my fertility until we've been TTC for a year and the thought of another six months of this is terrifying! Hope your cycle kicks in sooner than mine George91.....

George91 · 06/11/2018 20:47

Oh goodness it’s all quite terrifying. Are you TTC now Avocuddles? I’ve come off to try and prepare my body to ttc mid next year. I’m not very hopeful, felt sure something would have happened by now. I’ve never wanted to see a period so much. How long had you been on the mini pill for?
TTC a year before they’ll investigate? That’s an awful wait to endure, I hope you see something by way of AF or a positive test.

Avocuddles · 06/11/2018 21:17

We’ve been TTC ever since I stopped taking the pill, never expected it to work straight away but had hoped i would have at least had something like a normal cycle after a couple of months. I was on the mini pill for 9 years, prior to that I was on the combined pill but had to switch when I had a serious blood clot. No periods at all whilst on the mini pill which was nice and convenient at the time but now wishing I’d stopped sooner!

George91 · 09/11/2018 15:56

I had no periods whilst on mini either, which yes was blissful. Update. I’ve got my period today or a withdrawal bleed. I would’ve been due on Monday in my old cycle, 5 years of cerelle and ive come on around the same time. Fingers crossed this is good news and the same happens this time next month.

Tamalama · 12/11/2018 18:37

Hi, I have literally just come on my period but looking to come off the pill (Noriday) When would be the best time to stop taking it? Could I stop taking it today as it’s the first day of my period or should I wait until my period has finished?

Musonutter · 14/01/2019 11:39

I had a tough time. I went on the mini pill (cerazette) at around 17/18 years old and got changed to cerelle a couple of years later. I was wanting to come off to 1 just not having to keep taking meds everyday and 2 looking into recent future and hopefully having kids. So about 8 or 9 years on the pill I just stopped taking them which probably wasn't a good idea. I need to add that I was a late starter (around 15 or 16) and was ridiculously irregular and often heavy making me feel horrific about myself often wanting to just get rid of it all kind of situation.
So I stopped, went cold turkey so to speak, and had REALLY tender boobs for the whole of september but my sex drive went through the roof! I hadn't had anything until the end of October the same year where the bleeding started off light for a day then just went downhill from then. They say the average you loose is about 30-50ml in the whole period, I lost more than that in 12hrs or less (used a moon cup and pads). This lasted for 4 days in total, by the 1st day of heavy I passed out and the doctor got called out. I was put straight back on the same pill, iron tablets, and blood clotters and was ill for about 2/3 weeks. I have yet to go back to the doctors (busy student life) but I am terrified of coming off because of this experiance. I know now that I probably have a underlining problem such as polstitic ovaries so my experiance will probably be rare but if anyone was as bad as me before go to a professional first and explain EVERYTHING. My irregularity was I could have a couple of days apart to at least a year apart.

George91 · 28/03/2019 16:05

So....
I stopped taking cerelle in October and have had a period every month since. In Feb things started to change, I had my period and a week later had another bleed, at first I thought this could be implantation, so I did a test - negative. March comes I have my period normal cycle, and a week later another bleed and again this week I’ve had another bleed. I have visited my nurse who told me not to worry as I’ve recently had a clear smear result and monitor over the next few months. I’ve now had two bleeds since this period and am growing concerned as the latest bleed is slightly more accompanied by horrendous craps, back ache and nausea. Any similar experiences, quietly panicking - cheers

Vikkibadger · 03/06/2021 16:21

Hey I stopped cerazette 7 days ago I am having extreme mood swings feeling tired and down didn’t feel like it last week! Half of the day I’ll feel great and then for few hours in bed. So frustrating almost feel like going back to the pill lol

Dsml91 · 05/04/2022 17:53

I appreciate this reply was posted 10 years ago now, but I cannot thank your beluga for this information. I came off the pill on the 29th March. My ovulation tests have all been firmly positive and high since 30th and as of today still very high/peak levels. Optimistically cautious, I really hope I get the same kick as you did x
