false positive?!?

Hello everyone!

Please don't get me wrong, I am aware that false positive tests don't really exist. But I am very confused. Let me quickly say what has happened so far. I gave birth to my first child on the 31st December 2011, so he is almost 6 months old. I started weaning him about 3 weeks ago. About 1,5 weeks ago I started feeling funny, a little like when I was pregnant with my first, so I took a test. And it was positive!!!!! I wanted to confirm it, but all 6 (!) tests I took after that have all been negative. They have all been with morning urine and spaced out over about a week. The positive test was quite an insensitive one, the others have mostly had better sensitivities. I have an appointment in about a week, but I can't stop thinking about this! Am I or am I not pregnant?
I'd love to hear about any one else who has experienced something similar or can help me understand this!
PS. My period hasn't come back since the birth and I am not feeling any of my usual "periods-about-to come" pains, so I don't think the positive test was caused by a chemical pregnancy. As far as I know you can't miscarry without bleeding.

What brand did you use? I had a false positive with a clearblue plus and after reading up on it they are apparently notorious for this. Apparently blue dye tests are more likely for this to happen.

I used a German brand (PreSense) from a local drugstore (I live in Germany). It was the first test to detect my first pregnancy, even though the sensitivity isn't that great. It is also a pink dye test. I had a false positive on Clearblue a few months ago too, that was really disappointing.
Btw, the6 negative tests weren't all on one day - I took one every morning for 6 days after the first test - all very clearly negative.

Hello again!
In case anyone ever reads this thread again - a quick update! I went to my doctor and she confirmed that I wasn't pregnant. I have no idea where that positve test came from though. She said that she could tell from my uterus lining that there was also no way that I was pregnant and somehow miscarried without bleeding (I still haven't had a period since my last child was born). I assume it was a faulty test.

Hi Essre, thanks for the update. I hope that was the result you were after.

i got a false positive from a clearblue digital of all things!!!!! id taken a few cheap tests and all were negative. then i did a digital and it cam up positive 1-2 weeks. so went to gp who did another test, it came up neg. blood test neg. i was gutted. cant understand why the digital came up pregnant. and the cost maddened me too.

I'd wait 1-2 weeks and test again if I were you. I assume you're having symptoms or you wouldn't have taken the test. False positives almost never happen. It could be that the Clearblue digital test detected some HCG in your blood but it was too low for the blood test and the doctor's test. The blood test isn't 100% reliable either. If the test said 1-2 weeks then your pregnancy would be so early that it's quite possible that no other tests can detect it yet. Time always tells best.

Btw I called the maker of the test I took and sent a photo of the positive test. They said that the line wasn't in the right place, it was about 2 mm off where it should have been. They couldn't explain where it came from, but it wasn't really even a false positive, just a random line.
