42-day cycle? Is this possible?

I'm ttc while still bfing (at restricted hours, i.e. 5pm till midnight, then 5am till 9am) and in February got my first period (hooray!). DS is 15ms. I experience signs of ovulation about day 14 of my cycle as I always used to, including pain in my ovary and the fertile mucus. But then no period...for another 28 days. This has now happened twice and I'm a bit worried in case it's something to do with my venerable age, or maybe that I have had a fertilised egg each time but it's miscarried. Anyone else got any ideas? And is it possible to conceive on a very long luteal phase? And while I've seen plenty on lengthening a short cycle, what about shortening a long one?

Sorry if it's such a long shot, but I think if I went to a GP they'd just smile nicely and ask what I was trying to do conceiving at my age.

It sounds like your body is still trying to stabilise. It's possible that your body went through the motions of ovulation without actually releasing an egg - this would delay your period.

Do you chart or use OPKs? That may give you a better indication of if/when you are experiencing an LH surge (though this won't necessarily mean that you will ovulate) and temperature shift (which generally means ovulation has now taken place).

I had something similar the cycle before last (though not BF-related) where I seemed to gear up for ovulation around days 15-19, but didn't actually ovulate until day 41, giving rise to a 54 day cycle.

Best of luck to you :)

My periods came back when my (bf) kids were 14 weeks both times, and in both cases I had a lot of cycles when I had signs of ovulation a few times. I think my body was gearing up to ovulate repeatedly before actually doing it, perhaps my hormones were a bit off still, and at first my cycles were long (60 day, 45 days). But it does even out.

Thanks Geeklette and RancerDoo - it honestly hadn't occurred to me I may not actually be ovulating. Good advice re the temperature shift. I had all the kit for tracking my cycle before I had DS - will use a thermometer and the internet.

Hi, my periods didn't return until I stopped BFing in March. I'm temping again because I have irregular length cycles before ds. My first cycle was 44 days! I had ewcm for 17days and eventually detected ov on day 30. 2nd cycle is looking a little better, on day 16 and I've had ewcm for 8days, I'm now getting ov pain and faint + on the OPKs (which is usually the best I get) so hoping it'll be any day. Talk about messed up! Good luck everyone.
