Question for the just shaggers re booze

Just wondering....

I know government guidelines suggest no booze at all if ttc, but that's not realistic for most people. So wondering if you drink for half the month (during and just after your period) or abstain completely, or just don't worry about it.

With my son I got very pissed one night before my first missed period and felt very guilty. We were living with my parents at the time, so although we weren't using contraception we weren't actively trying either. (bit awkward with my folks in the bedroom next door iyswim)

So I'm just interested in what everyone else does/thinks. Have directed my question to the JSers as Wine is often mentioned as is ttc albeit casually

Hi,

I think the booze thing is more to do with it reducing fertility, than it damaging an embryo. I actually asked my doctor about this and she said that for the first couple of weeks the embryo hasn't implanted, so it doesn't share your blood supply, so the booze won't affect it.

I don't think that going on a three day bender is advised, but a couple of glasses of Wine doesn't hurt.

Ah that's interesting. So I felt guilty for no reason really. I was quite violently sick tho, so looking back thought my body was telling me something! Thanks for replying.

Oh dear our reputation is clear!!

As above. The baby doesn't share your blood stream until about 4 weeks post conception iirc? TTC can be a tough old game, and certainly in the early stages I wanted to be as casual and relaxed as possible, hence why I was an early joiner to the JS cult Wink . 2 years down the line I'm greatly reducing my intake (though it wasn't really over the recommended units that often anyway) as I've obviously got sub optimal fertility. Nothing wrong that they can find. But I've still not given up Wine completely. I tend to crack open a bottle the second my period arrives, then have very little once it ends.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/05/2012 14:38

We've been ttc for 5 years now, unexplained, so I've got to the stage where I think a few glasses of wine are actually likely to have zero impact.

crowface · 18/05/2012 16:57

Maybe I should join JS as think I would fit in then Nelly! Glad everyone has taken this in the way it was meant, ie, not having a go just interested about when you start acting pregnant as it were. It's not that I drink crazy amounts normally, but I'd say I try and have less when there's a chance that I may be pregnant, so any time after I think I've ovulated.

My DS turned one last week so would like to conceive soon, but don't really understand the temp thing and it sounds like a lot of work and I refuse to pay for ovulation tests just yet, tho may get desparate later on but it's early days yet!

Hi I just got my BFP today and for the past two weeks have actually been drinking more than our usual. I think if it relaxes you then that can only be a good thing, right?!

mrsbugsywugsy · 18/05/2012 17:16

don't tell anyone but I am working my way through all our nicest bottles of wine, on the grounds that once I'm pregnant I will need to have at least nine months off booze and I wouldn't want DP to drink them all to himself Grin

lollypopsicle · 18/05/2012 17:29

I have reduced my alcohol consumption but not given it up ( got a bottle in the fridge to share for tonight, I'm on tww)
Wine is a treat and a pleasure for me, to cut it out completely would suck a lot of the fun out of ttc. I can't live my life in the constant hope of being pregnant. I'd go insane.

That said, the week leading up to my bfp for now DS I had been drunk at least twice. I'd written off that month re ttc as i'd been ill. I was mortified at the thought of all that alcohol but he's turning out ok now Grin

Purpledragon · 18/05/2012 18:16

Just to add, I have read that it terms of protecting fertility the most important time to avoid Wine is the time leading up to ovulation. This came as a surprise to me, I guess I had never really thought about it in terms of fertility, rather 'don't drink in case you are pg'.

Keep it in mind now, but I'm not cutting it out completely. I like my wine and it would make me even more down bout TTC.

Leftwingharpie · 18/05/2012 18:51

For now I am drinking as normal, i.e. regularly but not excessively.

MuddyWellyNelly · 18/05/2012 19:08

Mrsbugsywugsy I love your theory! Mind you the problem is I've been at this so long, we keep replenishing supplies and it's getting expensive Wink

winkle2 · 18/05/2012 19:19

I've def cut back. Only had 2 glasses all week and will maybe have a couple of glasses tomorrow.

I wish I could drink more!!

I used to get drunk maybe 2-3 times a week pre-TTC. Sounds a lot but meeting a couple of friends during the week then a few with hubs Friday/at the weekend and it's easy to do.

Have your OH's cut back?

lollypopsicle · 18/05/2012 20:41

My DP has cut down too aside from getting paraletic for 3 days solid at a stag do the other week
