welovecouscous my AF returned when I was down to 3-4 feeds, around 12mo. What I did for the day feeds was moving DD to scheduled feeding once solid was well established. I was also working FT so she was already day weaned during the week, but demand fed during the weekends. The schedule was like bf on wake up, breakfast, mid-morning bf, lunch, mid-afternoon bf, tea, bedtime bf, then 1-2 feeds during the night. Around 12mo, I offered a cup of cows milk mid morning, and solid snacks mid afternooon instead. I only tackled night feeds at 15mo. So at your LO's age, I was at 2 feeds, wake up and bedtime. It's not so extreme as total weaning, is it? WHO recommends 2 year of bf, but I think many who follow this are doing a lot less than 10 feeds.
I followed Dr Jay Gordon methods for night weaning. One of the suggestions he gave was offer a cuddle instead of a bf. I found that DD was happily settled for the cuddle. Maybe you can try that, but for day weaning? For example, get some raisins on a plate, a cup of water, and then put him on your lap and see?
As for drinks, DD has full fat cows milk and water in a free flow cup.
