What shall I do?

Right so went for my first set of blood tests today with the nurse. After she was finished I asked when I would get the results back, she said it would take a couple of days and if there was anything wrong they would call me.

Now I'm puzzled, if my blood tests are ok surely I should be discussing with my gp what the next steps are? Shall I book an appointment with my gp for Friday and ask her about my results then or wait and see if they phone me?!

I would call to get the results just so you know, but then after you've done all the bloods, swabs etc book another appt to talk them all through. Not much point before you've got them all back.

If there's anything wrong the doctor will ring you, if not the receptionist will be able to say all is normal

Good luck!

Happilymarried155 · 08/05/2012 13:11

She has only sent me for bloods at the moment, that's why Im wondering if I should make an appointment because regardless of the results I will need to see her again I think, so confusing! X

I'd make an appointment with the GP for next week. Sometimes bloods take a while to come back. I agree, even of they're normal you need to know the next step,

modernvickyp · 08/05/2012 14:04

I too would recommend making an appointment - assuming that you have had blood tests because you haven't conceived as quickly as you might have then you certainly need to know what to do next!

On this note (!!) I have had day 21 and day 1 blood tests and am going for results tomorrow. OH is coming with as I think the Dr wants to do a test on his swimmers. Any advice on what to expect and what to as for gratefully received (apologies for hijacking thread!)

Happilymarried155 · 08/05/2012 14:19

Don't worry modern! I'm not sure about the SA thing, my day 21 blood tests are the first step for me and she said she would see what these results were before testing dh. Good luck with your results tho and please keep us posted!

Thanks for advice, didn't know whether I was being abit pushy and things. The nurse said blood test results will be in on Thursday so il ring Friday to double check and if they are in il book an appointment. Thanks guys :)

Re SA, when DH has his, they give him a pot and a firm with our details on and the form had a number to call to book an appointment. The waiting list in our area is quite long, about 3 months from booking to appointment. Reason is they have to analyse the samples within an hour of receiving them so they can only do a certain number each day. DH took his ahem sample in and we got the results a couple of weeks later. If they look odd they will usually retest. In some places, especially if you're over an hour's drive away they provide somewhere to create the sample. Hth.

keepitgoing · 08/05/2012 16:44

Oh wow it varies a lot then faith as here you just take sa along between 9 and 2, results a couple of days later (just put in our repeat today)

Must be hard to manage workload, much better for patients though

Christelle2207 · 08/05/2012 18:25

No harm in seeing the doc but I wa told I had to have 21 day test twice, and on both occasions the receptionist told me the outcome over the phone,

BadgerFace · 09/05/2012 19:23

Ladies, I just wanted to check that those of you doing day 21 tests have a 28 day cycle becasue I found out quite far down the line of TTC that those particular tests are supposed to 7 days prior to the end of your cycle, rather than specifically day 21. So if, like me, you have a long cycle day 21 is not the right day...

Just thought I'd drop in as I had a lot of bad advice from my GP and want to ensure others don't have the same bad experience I did!

Good luck to you all.

Pipbin · 09/05/2012 20:44

When I had my bloods I booked an appointment to get the results. They wouldn't tell me over the phone. As DH had already had a SA she referred us from there.

bugsylugs · 09/05/2012 20:52

Op and any others whatever your results other half needs sperm analysis.

Happilymarried155 · 09/05/2012 20:59

That's what I thought, well I'm going to be much more forceful this time and an going to book an appointment to get the results and work out our next steps. After talking with dh we decided it didn't matter what the results said we would still need to work out our next steps are and discuss them with the gp. She kind of fobbed me off the first time I went saying 'come back after two years' and I think she only agreed this time when I was all tearful and upset (AF had just arrived!) will have an appointment on Friday so will let you know, thanks for all your advice x

Update, I rang up earlier and there is a problem with my blood results :( the receptionist said some were normal but there is a problem with progesterone :( been waiting for 3 hours now for the doctor to call me back! Anyone else had a problem with progesterone? X

OP posts:
eurochick · 10/05/2012 15:31

Low progesterone is usually a sign that you are not ovulating if it was taken at the right time (ideally 7 days after when you think you ovulate or if you don't know 7 days before your next period is expected)

HaveALittleFaithBaby · 10/05/2012 15:45

As euro says, it could be an indicator you didn't ovulate but try not to panic.
My first progesterone was on the low side (15) but it was taken cd22 (21 was a Sunday) but it turned out to be a short cycle, I think 25 days. I was convinced I wasn't ovulating but after better timed bloods I got them within normal ranges, so don't panic just yet. You need the full picture of when AF arrives to know if it's really low. Are your periods regular?

Happilymarried155 · 10/05/2012 15:58

I had it in cd 22, but AF is generally 30 days so I guess that would be right? I don't know the exact counts yet as still waiting for the doctors to call me.
I don't feel to panicky to be honest, I've found the last 15 months really difficult and at least now the ball is rolling I feel like I'm taking more positive steps in the right direction. I will try and ring the doctors in abit I think and see what they say!

OP posts:
Happilymarried155 · 10/05/2012 19:47

Oh my gosh!! The doctor called me and everything is fine! Progesterone is 65 which shows I ovulate! Bloody receptionist! X

OP posts:
HaveALittleFaithBaby · 10/05/2012 19:54

which is once again why I really don't think receptionists should give info like that over the phone!!!
That's great news Happily. I hope you can get things moved forward for further investigations now. You definitely need to make sure your DH gets his SA done. Good luck ttc!

Happilymarried155 · 10/05/2012 22:22

Yes I will do, thanks :) she wants me to wait a couple more months which il do but after that il be more demanding, I'm starting some acupuncture too, so hopefully a combination of knowing the results and acupuncture will de stress me. She said 65 is a really good result too so that's a bonus! Thanks for everyone's help, I hope we all get out BFP very soon x
