My blood test results

Hi lovely ladies,

Wondered if you could cheer me up a bit? Been TTC#2 since Dec/Jan which, given my 22-23 day cycles, makes this cycle 7 for me. Taking longer than it took for DD1 so starting to feel a bit blue. My GP seems to be on a one woman mission to populate SW London so offered me Day3 blood tests this month. Got the results yesterday - 2 issues:

  1. I have mild hypothyroidism and have been prescribed lexothyroxine 50mg. GP said it wasn't too bad but good idea to sort out for general good health and because it can impact on fertility. Anyone get their BFP after taking this med? How long will it take to have an effect?

  2. my FHS was 8.6. She said she would have been happier if it was lower and this may be first sign of things "slowing down" which made me feel like a geriatric! I'm 32 FFS! Is this a high score?? Bit of googling suggested this was normal but maybe someone can tell me more.

Trying not to be a sad loser as I know TTC can take ages and must keep enjoying my lovely DD1 and not miss out by being preoccupied with TTC so hoping you may have some encouraging words.

Hi, sorry that you have not had any relies yet. Usually most posts get answered perhaps people who could answer with relevant info just did not go online at the time of your post.

It conceived ds straight away but it took me about 8 myths for dd which made me. Bit anxious but did not go to the GP would have done if nothing happened by a year. Interestingly my DH does a lot of cycling and i read that can have an adverse affect on sperm

Anyway hope someone comes along with more relevant informtion

Thanks LEMONADEGIRL Smile

My fsh was 9.5 on day 5 and I'm 34. I'm supposed to have it again on day 3 and it may shift a little but probably not much. I'd be happy with your result! My consultant isn't worried by anything under 10.2 I had a hissy fit when I got mine back but trawling the net has revealed it really isn't that bad. Gps aren't fertility experts. Our was all scare mongery about dhs sperm but again, consultant said it was fine. I also have a big fat fibroid so all in all it's probably not surprising I haven't conceived yet 16 months in. Try not to worry. There are so many people who get pregnant with much much higher fsh. And the majority of people will never even know what theirs was. That's what I hate about this, knowing way way too much about my body!

Manda472 · 26/04/2012 20:55

Anything under 10 is great...I wouldn't worry too much.
Mine at its highest went up to 18.1, they said ivf wouldn't work and I proved them wrong!
It's just one number anyway, you would need it charted over several cycles to get a good picture as it goes up and down. That really is a good number so don't panic

Bewler · 26/04/2012 21:02

Aw thanks ladies Smile. Fact that it was raised as an "issue" worried me a bit. Might be the thyroid that needs more sorting...wondering how long it will take for the lexothyroxine to kick in...

Its great that they have identified a thyroid problem as that can often lead to short cycles or problem cycles. 22/23 is very short indeed and it could be that you are not ovulating or your luteal phase is very short.

It is worth asking for a progesterone test 7 days after ovulation (often called a 'day 21' test but this will not work for you on day 21 as it assumes ovulation on day 14)to check if you are ovulating.

Your FSH is absolutely fine and it will also fluctuate a bit, anything under 10 is great and there are plenty of women on here who have conceived with much higher numbers.

Good luck!

Hi Bewler

I was diagnosed in January with mild hypothyroid (TSH was high - about 10 - but T3/T4 were normal) and was put on 50mcg thyroxine.

By end of Feb my TSH was down to 2.35.

At the end of March I got a BFP (after 11 months of TTCing) and I am now 8 weeks pregnant Smile. So I am pretty sure it's the thyroxine which led to my BFP.

I don't know about the FSH sorry. Very best of luck.

PS are you also getting your progesterone tested to see if you ovulate? This would be done on day 21 for someone with a 28 day cycle (so is often called a "day 21 test") but for you should be more like day 17/18 probably as it's meant to be done 7 days after estimated ovulation time.

minipie · 27/04/2012 11:39

oops I missed farfalla's post but see she has suggested the same thing!

Bewler · 28/04/2012 08:32

minipie Congratulations!! I was really hoping someone with a similar story would post with a positive outcome!! Thanks! My cycles since coming off the pill a few years ago have always been shorter than standard 28 days but since having DD the longest cycle has been 26 days and mostly hover around 21-23 which I know must be too short for a decent luteal phase. I didn't know hypothyroidism might contribute to that so I'm really glad to be on thyroxine now.

farfalla I haven't had "21"day bloods suggested to me yet but I'd like to have them done if nothing happens in the next couple of months. Plan is to have a blood test in another 6 weeks to check thyroid again but perhaps I can time that so they can do those tests as well. Doctor said at my age (32!) I should only expect to ovulate 9/12 months anyway Sad. Thanks for reassurance about FSH Smile

I have always suspected that my luteal phase is a bit rubbish - according to ovulation calculators etc my fertile time is day 7-13ish of my cycle and I do have ovulation pains around that time but they seem to go on for days so I'm never sure and POAS has never yeilded a smiley face. And then just when I think I'm done shagging for the month I get EWCM around day 14/15 which must surely be too late if my period is due a week later!?!

Bewler glad to have given you hope Smile

I didn't have a short luteal phase, I was the opposite - long cycles due to PCOS (14 day luteal phase but late ovulation so rubbish eggs). My cycles did get shorter and ovulation got earlier after I started the thyroxine though - so maybe the reverse will happen for you??

I have read on here that vit B6 helps lengthen luteal phase... can't hurt?

Bewler · 28/04/2012 17:24

minipie realised after I'd posted that it was farfalla who'd mentioned short cycles not you Blush but yes perhaps the reverse will happen for me! Will ask doc about B6 when I go back for more bloods in 6 weeks. I did mention that I thought I had a short LP but she gave me a "you spend too much time on the internet* look!! Guess she's right - dont know when I ovulate so maybe it is earlier than I think...who knows! Have a lovely evening Smile
