A weird question about ttc (tmi alert, sorry!)

OK, so my DH and I started TTC a couple of months ago. I'd done quite a lot of research on it and learned about fertile times etc but tbh for the last couple of months we'd not really been taking much notice of dates etc and just seeing if it happened nonetheless. Anyway, this month, we went on our (belated!) honeymoon (we got married last year and were unable to get enough time off together until this year), and it happily coincided with when I'd be ovulating. So... over the 7 days which my iPhone app(!) told me I'd be fertile, we did the deed 5 times which I guess should give us quite a good chance. Although this is a lot for us (we're normally 'once a week' kinda people!) I decided to not get stressy over whether we'd conceived or not as I'm sure it'll happen at some point plus I won't know until next week at the earliest (I'm currently 6 dpo) so there was no point in spoiling the rest of the holiday by stressing about it.

However, when I was 2 dpo I got some really bad cramps like mild period pains and my back was cramping up too. I was a little bit excited at this as I thought that it may mean that something was happening, but then the thought occured to me (and here comes the weird question...) - could these pains just be because we'd been doing the deed a lot more than normal? When we first got together, we used to do it pretty much every day and I never experienced anything like that so it's confused me to say the least! Apart from that I do feel pretty yucky, really tired, have got sore boobs and am quite bloated but the travelling back from honeymoon was pretty intense so it could just be that I'm tired from that. I feel like everything I'm experiencing could be an early symptom but could also be because of something else totally unrelated - argh!

Anyway, my main question was about the pains at 2 dpo - what do you think could have caused them? Also is there anything else I should be looking out for?

I think they could have been almost anything - mild urinary tract infection, too much time on the plane, placebo effect, random coincidence etc etc

The only reliable thing to look out for is the marks on a pregnancy test when you period doesn't arrive, but sore boobs are a classic.

Just thank your lucky stars you are on holiday with lots of lovely distractions, when I was ttc this time I became quite frazzled waiting for my period as I had nothing to take my mind off it and was so keen for a yes!!! Grin

Hope you have succeeded - I conceived on my honeymoon and it always felt romantic to me and when no-one is around I call him my honeymoon baby. Grin

Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Gin, only problem now is that I'm back at work with not much to distract me from the symptom spotting!

Last month I managed to delay AF for 5 days through stress - literally an hour after getting a BFN on a test, it came!

Have got some more pains today - although they've happened since posting so are probably caused by me thinking too much. They feel like they're in a smaller area to where my period pains normally are, i.e. more central if that makes sense? I wish there was some kind of way of knowing instantly if anything's happening...!

Oh god yes! The dreaded two week wait!! Gahhhhh!

I p'd on a stick and got BFN, literally the second it hit the bottom of the bin I came on!! Pah!

It's awful isn't it. Good luck. try to relax

2 dpo is too early for the bean to implant. Therefore you may have conceived this month your body wouldn't know it yet! I find I tend to get mild cramps from about 3 dpo. I always like to thinks it's implantation but logic tell me that it's not.

However, none of this ever stops me from symptom spotting like mad!

I'd actually say the cramps are more likely to be ovulation pain. Apps are based on a 'typical' patterns of ovulation, don't get me wrong they're not bad, but only blood test can accurately confirm ovulation. I've foudn charting helps me and a lot of people rely on opks for indication of ovulation. To be honest though, for the first year I'd just concentrate on enjoying the sex rather than adding the stress that either of those come with - I only started to get a clearer idea of when I was ovulating when my blood tests for progesterone came back on the low side - turned out they were testing way too late!
You can't delay your af through stress - that's not really how it works! Your ovulation can be delayed by stress which can result in a later af, is that what you mean?
My best recommendation when ttc is to try to dtd 3 times a week, every week. That should be enough to hit the right time but not create too much pressure around sex. You don't want your OH thinking you only want him for his sperm!

Hmmm...I know I definitely ovulated 2 days before the cramps as I often get ov pains and felt them 2 days before the cramps. The pain I get with ovulation is also much different and in a different place to the pains at 2 dpo and I also never feel ov pains in my back like I did 2 dpo. My periods are always pretty irregular so I guess that may be why AF was late last month but I've also had years of doctors telling me that my irregular periods have been caused by stress so I guess I believed them :/ whereas all this time I was probably delaying ovulation?!

It's probably a good job that I can feel ovulation as once I know that it's happened, I can then time when AF is supposed to come as from that point onwards things are pretty regular with me.

I guess that the cramps at 2 dpo may have just been my insides 'protesting' at too much effort to conceive! Blush

Only problem is that now I'm stressy about whether we succeeded or not, plus I'm getting a bit PMS-y so I'm feeling everything - sore boobs, tired, cramps, indigestion, bloated, sicky...all good signs but also all easily explained away by stress and PMS!

Well...an update...AF is due today (maybe tomorrow at latest) and no AF-type cramps, just a kind of tickly feeling down there instead. Plus I woke up this morning and my poor boobs are covered in purple stretch marks :0

Hopefully they're good signs!

Thanks to all for your advice, was really helpful :)

Well ouch to your poor boobies! It sounds optimistic. Let us know! :)

Wiggy29 · 24/04/2012 11:52

Ohhh, yes, that sounds promising. I sometimes get a dull ache when we dtd a lot (i.e. daily over more than a few days) but it sounds promising for you. When are you going to test?x

FoofFighter · 24/04/2012 13:54

POAS!

spg1983 · 24/04/2012 15:44

Tomorrow as I'm not sure whether I'm due today or tomorrow so playing it safe. Just so worried about getting a negative - I wouldn't rule out all of these symptoms being caused by me wanting it/thinking about it so much! Am I right in thinking that I need to use cheaper tests, i.e. 1 line for neg, 2 lines for positive rather than a clearblue straightaway? I have a clearblue but don't want to waste it on a negative :(
