Mirena coil?

Anyone have any experience of TTC after removal of mirena coil? Me and DH are hoping to start later this year, would it be worth removing it a while before we start trying and use other protection, or would it not make much difference?

Yes I would have it removed a while before wanting to conceive, I believe some people have had issues conceiving after having one.

Ok, thanks. Would it have to just be condoms once it was out, or could I start taking the pill? Would I have the same problem coming off the pill?

The hormonal effects of the pill are equally if not more likely to cause delay in return to fertility than the mirena. Your cycle should return to normal within a couple of cycles of removal.

Everyone is different and some people will have issues. I had my coil out mid Jan and by March was regular. I'd say have it removed a couple of months ahead and use condoms until you are ready so your cycle can re-establish itself.

It took 14 months after I had the mirena out before my cycle returned - and before it I was freakishly fertile. Would never have had the thing in if someone had explained the risks to me.

I suppose it could depend on how long you've had it in for. how long has it been?

I had it put in 0ct and removed beginning of march - so only 6mths. I used to have 5wk cycles. first cycle after removal was only 27 days (with 10day luteal phase). currently waiting to ov (cd 16) not sure when it will arrive. hopefully it will be back on track really soon.

Don't listen to the scare stories about trying to conceive after having a Mirena in. I had mine in for over two years and conceived as soon as it was taken out! I am 34. I had bleeding a couple of days after it came out, could tell I was ovulating about a week or so after that (due to discharge etc) and then got pregnant.

Baby is due in September :)

My GP told me that I should become fertile straight away and that sometimes they put people who are having trouble conceiving on hormonal contraceptives because when you come off them your body has a burst of hormones and it is actually a really good time to conceive. She also said that that is why there is a lower chance of miscarriage if you conceive after being on the pill or Mirena - because you body fires out its best eggs :)

When you have your mirena out they will ask you if you have had sex in the past week because sperm can live for up to seven days so you can get pregnant as soon as it is taken out.

Hope that helps.

I should say, my GP said that the decrease in fertility after having mirena out (compared to pre-mirena) could only be caused my being older (not the mirena itself)

Thankyou chaya and good luck for September! Smile
