Temperature spike at the end of my cycle

I'm having a strange cycle for temping and was hoping someone could shed some light on this. I had a temp spike on CD13 which I assumed was an early OV. My temp stayed high for 3 days and then took a drastic drop (36.7° down to 35.9°). It recovered to my normal base line around 36.4° and stayed around there for the rest of my cycle until CD27 when it spiked again to 36.7° and has stayed high.

I have only been temping a few months so haven't been able to identify any real patterns in my cycle but I assume the drop after the assumed OV meant that I hadn't OV'd this month which doesn't surprise me too much as I had huge amounts of stress that week but what is going on with the strange late cycle spike?

When your temp stays high at the end, it usually means you are pregnant. Have you tested?

MissMedusa · 29/03/2012 08:00

I have tested and it's negative. Temp was still high this morning though and now I'm a day late for AF.

If I had to guess I'd say that the stress (dental surgery) may have suppressed the OV the first time around and now, two weeks later when everything has calmed down again, it's had another go at it. If that's the case then I guess AF won't come for a while.

It could have been a delayed O on CD27. Do you have your chart online and could post a link? If O was delayed, you might still be in the luteal phase and AF might not be due for another week or two?

Fertility Friend predicts that as well. Not sure if this will work but here'ss my chart:

Hmm that didn't work, but you can share by going to Sharing/Charting home page/Setup and following the instructions.

Sounds like FF may be right though, there are lots of things that can cause temporary spikes and dips and apparently stress can delay O. I had a weird 3 day dip a few days after ovulation last month which I was convinced was an implantation dip...but no, AF arrived on schedule!

By the way are you doing vaginal temping? My temps seem to be a lot less rocky since I have been...

Alright let's try this again.

Looking at your chart would suggest that the current crosshairs at cd26 for ovulation could be accurate delayed ov.

Are each of the temps taken at the same time?
Are you open mouth breathing during the night sometimes?
Is your thermometer reliable?

If you continue to get irratic temps, then it might be worth looking at method of temping.

It is possible that there's something up with the thermometer but this cycle is definitely strange. AF is now 4 days late and I'm pretty sure I'm not PG as have tested twice. This is the latest I have been in as long as I can remember.

Hi again, I also wonder whether FF might be less reliable due to not recording your temp every day? Just a thought. Good luck with it. And stress can definitely mess with ovulation so I wouldn't worry too much!

MissMedusa · 03/04/2012 08:06

That could be it. I don't tend to temp on weekends as I get up a bit later, I wonder how much difference it makes if you temp an hour or two later?

Regardless I'm on CD34 now and still no AF so something is definitely up. Temp has dropped a bit now (gradually) but still above baseline. I'm guessing AF must be on the way soon. The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned.

If you didn't ovulate till Day 26/27 then technically you are still only 7/8 dpo and therefore not late.
Lots of things can delay ov, stress included, so I'd say hang in there for another week to take you to 13/14 dpo and test again.

MissMedusa · 05/04/2012 08:19

Finally my temperature has dipped below the coverline at 10 dpo. I suspect AF will be on her way soon.

Yep, looks like temping is a pretty good predictor. AF arrived late last night.

At last, after 36 days, this cycle is finally over.
