FREAKING out re conception - can anyone offer advice or a slap in face with large kipper?

Can anyone explain my chances of getting pg the first time DH and I have unprotected sex in 15 years...? I am 35 and my period ended 3 days ago (regular 28 day cycle).

We want a baby but for reasons too complicated to bore anyone with, this month would be a very, very bad time to conceive... We'd been planning to start TTC (or stop preventing pregnancy at least) in March, but tonight we got - ahem - carried away.

As I said above, I'm 35 and have regular cycle, no obviously evident fertility problems, this is quite literally the first time we've had unprotected sex since meeting 15 years ago (yes, I am that much of a control freak that we've never had so much as a hint of an accident before now!) Wink

I'm trying to be lighthearted here but I'm in a total panic. I'm rubbish at understanding fertility maths so I hoped one of the doughty MNers might be able to give me a rough idea of my chances, and/or metaphorically slap me in the face with a kipper if I'm being ludicrous.

Thanks so much

when did you have the unprotected sex?

if it was in the last three days then your chances of getting pregnant are probably quite small but how long did you have your period for?

THanks TBE - MAP would be just a little too crazy even for me, as I do really want a baby and at 35 I guess I do really need to acknowledge that if it happens, it happens and if I want one I shouldn't be preventing it 'just' because I've messed up the timing IYSWIM. But thanks v much for the post; you're right of course, it's just not a sensible recourse for me. :)

Yuleing fanjo - period started last Sunday, ended on Thursday and the unprotected sex was today... my frantic internet research suggests I'm not in my most fertile window but that's all

I'm not sure why four weeks difference in timing is so crucial if you were planning on ttc next month anyway. What if you got pregnant next month and then had the baby 3-4 weeks early?
Don't stress about it. You are highly unlikely to have conceived at this point in your cycle and I wouldn't bother with the MAP

KatAndKit - you're right. Having slept on it I do think that maybe a lot of my panic is just because it's been a very long time for me to build up to the point where I'm actually starting to TTC (I have had a lot of issues around this, revolving around family and genetic problems). Last night was the first time I'd EVER let myself get carried away and I think maybe I'm just reacting to that. I'm not used to letting go of control!

Thanks for your post, very sensible advice thanks

It's because ttc is a big step! those first few times with no contraception can be very very strange after so many years of taking all the precautions.
Good luck for when you start ttc! You soon forget that you aren't using contraception.
