I miscarried on 12/18/05 at 13wks and had a D&C done on the 19th. Since then we have been trying...it has been 4 weeks ...how long should I wait to take a pregnancy test? When will it be accurate?

Any suggestions.

If you've been having unprotected sex you could be pregnant...
I miscarried, had a D&C, and I ovulated about 2 weeks later... I fell pregnant and went on to have a healthy daughter....

TEST

summermom,

I am very sorry for your loss.
I was looking at a site last night called www.pregnancyloss.info which gives quite a detailed explanation of what you can expect to experience following a miscarriage - much more detailed than I have read anywhere else. For the first trimester (which is what I was reading about) it talks about the HcG levels falling to zero at around day 10 after the bleeding started, at the earliest, and then after that your cycle being set back to zero. So you could expect your next period to be 4/5 weeks after your HcG levels are zero if everything is going smoothly. That is a best case scenario, I think.

Did you get a negative pregnancy test - when was that?

You could buy in bulk the ultra sensitive pregnancy tests (www.earlypregnancy.co.uk) - they work out at under 40p per test and then if you were to use one every morning it will be much less costly and your first postive will help you & the midwives date the pregnancy more accurately?

All the very, very, best. I have everything crossed for you. x

Sorry to hear about your loss. I had a miscarriage at 11 and a half weeks and I was still testing positive from that pregnancy one month afterwards. About 35 days afer the miscarriage, I tested negative.

I spent quite a lot of time looking for information about how long it takes for hcg levels to return to zero because I didn't want to take a test, think I was pregnant, and then think I had another miscarriage when my period started. The length of time it takes for hcg levels to return to zero after a miscarriage seems to depend on how far along you were. In a normal pregnancy hcg levels seem to peak at around week 12 and then drop off. "After a miscarriage, the level of hcg will fall by half every 36 hours that passes after the pregnancy dies" - just found this in Professor Regan's book "Miscarriage, what every woman needs to know". She also says that it is relatively uncommon for people to get pregnant before they get their first period after a miscarriage. However, there are obviously lots of people , including some on this site, who have been successfull. Incidentally, ovulation kits may not be not reliable if you have just miscarried as they also react to the pregnancy hormones.

If you had a D&C on the 19th, and it was done properly, then your HCG levles shold have returned to zero then.

I had my ERPC (same as a D&C - it's the formal name for when they "clear you out" after a miscarriage) on 10 November and my period was exactly 28 days later. It might have been later, but was unlikely to have been much earlier (although it could have been a couple of days earlier, as my cycle is a normally 24-26 day cycle)

I haven't taken a test only since I wasn't sure if it would be accurate, and I didn't want to get my hope up if it was positive(and wrong). I talked to my doctor today and he said that I probably wouldn't be getting a false reading if I took one but that I should wait 2 weeks and take one then.....I doubt that I can wait that long!!!

Thanks for all the great info...you gals are always do much help.
