How long does it take for things to return to normal after an early misacarriage?

I got my bloods results back today. My HCG levels have halved over the last 48 hours. I was about 5 weeks gone. I've been bleeding for a week, it's got heavier over the last couple of days. Not much pain but it is a bit uncomfortable.

I'm gutted but I sort of knew it wasn't going well because of all the bleeding Sad

I want to know when I can expect things to get back to normal so we can get trying again. The doctor at the EPU said I can expect the bleeding to lessen over the next couple of days but I want to know when I can expect my cycle to return to normal. I know everyone's bodies are different but when did you get back to normal?

Poor you. What are your cycles like normally I am 28/29 days and starting from next period this returned. Did they suggest you wait until you have had one normal period? Dates etc.
I can't imagine you should bleed much longer. Look after yourself and good luck. (says the lady who had mc then two kids!)

Thanks Wolfie, my cycles vary quite a bit, shortest one I have recorded was 27 days and longest 41. They average at 34.

Doctor didn't say anything about waiting. Were you told to wait?

Anyone else?

Sorry to hear about your mc. I had a mmc in September, thought I was 9 weeks but baby died at 5/6 weeks. I let things happen naturally and I bled for about 3/4 weeks in total, 2 days of which were very heavy and painful cramping. I got sick of bleeding and went to EPU and they scanned me and said there was a small amount of tissue left and I was still getting a faint positive pregnancy test. I had to go back two weeks later to make sure everything was gone and thankfully it was and I got a negative pregnancy test. This was nearly 6 weeks after my mmc being diagnosed.
I was told by EPU to wait for one cycle before ttc to let your body recover and to make any future pregnancy easy to date. I think some people don't wait but my period came quite quickly after negative pregnancy test ( about 10 days although EPU said it would probably take 3-6 weeks to have a period) so I was ok to wait.
I got pregnant on my next cycle and am currently 9 weeks pregnant. I feel incredibly lucky but I am a bit of an emotional wreck as I am so worried it's going to go wrong again and it's not been that long since mmc. So do take your time to grieve for what you have lost and good luck with your future pregnancies.

Thanks littlelamb, and congratulations Smile Your nerves about this new PG are understandable, I would definitely be the same!

3 or 4 weeks of bleeding sounds awful, aside from the unpleasant practical side of it, it must have felt like the miscarriage was being dragged out over a month, poor you.

I'll just have to wait and see what my body does, won't I? Hopefully it'll be in tune with my wishes and get itself back on track sooner rather later. Waiting and not knowing is difficult though.

I had three weeks bleeding following medical management, but my cycles were back on track within 6 weeks. Hope that helps.

ManyMomentsOfMadness · 08/01/2012 10:48

I didn't bleed for too long after my 6 week mc. I fell pg again within 6 weeks.
For me it was the emotional side that I hadn't considered would take so long to settle down.
Try again when you feel ready.

Thank you Tiago and ManyMoments, it does help to hear about other people's experiences.

Are you PG now ManyMoments? 6 weeks wasn't long to wait at all was it?

We've been TTC for almost a year now without the hint of anything happening so, although this PG has ended, I'm trying to view it in the positive light that I did actually get pregnant so it will happen again.

My DD is now 5mo!! Time has flown.
I read a lot of things at the time that said you are more fertile after being pg whether it went to term or not, well it seemed to be the case for me. I hope this is the case for you too.

RightUpMyRue · 08/01/2012 19:21

A 5 mo DD, what a lovely result for you Smile

Completely anecdotal evidence but two of my friends who had babies got pregnant again quickly afterwards after having had years of no pregnancies. It's probably do with extra hormones. It's a little ray of extra hope anyway!
