Just had HSG and scared

Hello

Sorry that I only seem to post when I have a question myself but I would really appreciate any wise words.

I have just come back from my ultrasound and HSG and feeling very frightened. The procedure iteslf was very painful (not normal for most people) and the Radiologist gave me brief feedback. There is scarring on the right fallopian tube and she described the tubes as having 'limitations'. She wouldn't extend upon this as need to discuss with gynae.

On the screen there was a big ball of fluid on one tube and I couldn't see the other (admitedly the untrained eye).

I am going out of my mind with worry. We are nearly 2 years in to TCC with one early miscarriage when we first started. We have some male morphology problems too.

I am scared that my tubes won't work and about what will happen next. I have no symptoms and regular periods.

Help and thank you.

Try to look at this positively: you are now making progress towards a possible solution as to why you have been ttc for almost 2 years without producing a baby. Once you have a reason, you can then look at solutions for how you deal with it. You can investigate whether the tubes could be unblocked, whether IVF is the answer for you, etc. The one mc suggests that some eggs must be getting through the tubes.

To share my own experience, I went through all the standard tests, including a HSG without any cause being found for our inability to conceive, ending up in the "unexplained infertility" category with a referral for IVF. I then went and paid privately to investigate immune issues and it turns out I have high levels of something known as natural killer cells, which might be stopping an embryo implanting. I am on my first cycle of treatment for that. I had mixed feelings about the diagnosis: it was horrible to think that my body might have been rejecting many perfectly good embryos over the months we have been trying but it was a good thing to have a possible explanation for why we don't have a baby yet despite everything seeming to be ok, and to have a treatment plan to follow.

Good luck for your gynae appt. Go in armed with questions!

Thanks Euro

I was wondering about getting NK cells tested too as I didn't think for one minute there would be an issue with my tubes. But for now this will need to be my focus.

Will try to stay positive but it just feels so overwhelming some days.

Good luck with your new treatments - I have everything crossed for you.

Hiya, really sorry the HSG hasn't given you the outcome you were expecting,it is so scary being told that this is wrong and that is wrong with us, I've also had HSG when the outcome hasn't been good, one last year which explained why the iVG we'd just spent £5k on was never going to work. Anyway I agree with eurochick you need to try and see this as a positive, for me it was some what a relief to know finally what was wrong and that we could progress from there and find a solution and reach our dream of another child.

How long do you have to wait for your gynae appointment? Make sure you make a list of questions before you go in, as it you're anything like me your mind will go blank and if possible take someone in with you, I know that when ive been given bad news at appointments I then find it very difficult to take in what I'm being told, also I always seems to just remember the negative bits of the appointment so having someone else there means they can get more neutral perspective on things.

Wishing you the best of luck

Thanks Helenlou

The gynae can see me in nearly 7 weeks time. That feels like quite along wait - they will get me in sooner if they can but unlikely. I like your idea of being prepared with questions. My mind does go blank as emotions take over.

I'm sorry to hear that you spent so much money on a treatment which was not going to work. It's so hard to keep picking yourself up and dusting yourself off and keep trying don't you find. What is the next step for you with trying to become pregnant again? Wishing you loads of luck.

Any ideas if it is possible to 'fix' tubal scarring and aim for natural conception or is IVF the usual / only treatment option?

Also did anyone else have scarring in the tubes but no symptoms?

Thanks again xx

I really hope you manage to get an appointment quickly, it's horrible waiting and only knowing half the information.

We were very fortunate and had surgery to correct the problems found during the HSG, which were related to my uterus rather than tubes, and I am currently 4 months pregnant.

Have a look at the website of the surgeon who operated on me, there is a massive section on surgery vs ivf, and has section on tubal surgery

www.92harleystreet.com/reproductive-surgery

I'm really sorry but i don't know very much about tubal problems, except if you have a hydrosphinx (sp??) that your should definitely get that fixed before embarking on ivf as it can have a big impact.

Wishing you the best of luck

X

I'm not sure how I didn't see this thread at the time given that I was (obsessively) googling HSG around this date ... ! I too had a HSG at the beginning of the year expecting it to be an 'elimination exercise' - and was quite surprised when it showed that my left tube appears to be blocked (I haven't yet spoken in detail with a doctor about the results).

Sarlat - I've just read your comments on the IVF thread (I'm not stalking you - I promise !!) and could have written them word by word myself. It looks like IVF will be the next step for us and - althought it's a step in the right direction - I still feel slightly disappointed by it.

Just wanted you to know that you aren't the only one in your postion !
