Referred for a HSG - what does it entail!?!

Following confirmation from my consultant this morning that I have PCOS I have been referred for a HSG to check my tubes before Clomid will be prescribed!

Just wondered if anyone has been through this and could let me know what to expect!! I have also read that getting pregnant is quite likely following the procedure - how true is this? And has anyone fallen pg in the cycle after a HSG?

Hi- sorry to hear about your PCOS diagnosis, but hopefully now your doctor knows the problem and can treat it, it won't be long till you get your BFP.

I've had four HSGs in total, to be honest they have ranged in comfort level but all have been bearable. I would take some Nurofen about 1/2 hour before the treatment and some paracetamol straight after and take the antibiotics if they prescribe them, some consultants don't. I felt cramping during the procedure, but felt fine pretty quickly afterwards, and drove myself home after three of the procedures. I didn't fall pregnant after the first three HSGs but fell pregnant cycle of my 4 th HSG but I don't think it was due to the procedure, I think it would have happened anyway.

Best of luck with your procedure

Hi, I had an HSG back in September. I would second taking some pain killers just before the procedure. I found it really painful as they injected the dye but it literally only lasted about 30 secs so was bearable. I didn't really have any pain afterwards and I was given an antibiotic suppository after the procedure. I did fall pregnant the cycle afterwards but unfortunately it was a tubal ectopic (ironic considering the scan showed lovely clear tubes!) but that was just bad luck and I'm sure the HSG helped me get pregnant.

Good luck! Smile

It's not overly pleasant but the anticipation was worse than the actual procedure. My dh came with me and took me for posh cake after which made me feel like we were in it together. I bled a lot - but I am a bleeder and bleed at smear tests etc - but take pads just in case.

Thanks ladies!! I know I should be used to having things shoved up there by now (I had a colposcopy a few years ago which I am sure is far worse). I think it's just the thought of having a tube inserted into my cervix that bothers me, not really sure why, but seeing so many people who have had the procedure makes me feel loads better!! It's for the greater good!!!

There is a little part of me, however, that is hoping by some miracle, that I fall pg before i need to have it Grin

Thanks thanks again!! Smile
