Hi all I'm new to MN and also ttc, I was just wondering if anybody can help me with a query. I have have been using OPKs since day 15 of my cycle and had faint lines but no positives. My partner and I have had swi since day 11. Today I had a strong period like cramp so when I came home I tested and had a very definate positive OPK (day 20) but my cervix is low (I felt it during intercourse which is VERY unusual). From what I have read my cervix should be high if I ovulated shouldn't it?
For the last couple of days my tummy has felt strange, like when you drive over a hill, but I dont know if I'm looking for funny symptoms etc and therefore feeling things that aren't there!
So to sum up if I ovulated shouldn't my cervix be high??
Any advice is much appreciated!!!thanks x

Hi Sparkles i'm afraid i can't help but thought this might bump you up the list again. Hope you get the response you want...

Unless you have a very long cycle you are starting too late with the opks

as for your cervix i think you are reading too much into things. Best indicator of your fertile period is cervical mucous.

I agree with the previous poster, you should be testing from about CD11. Unless you're prone to very long cycles? If you got a positive OPK today, I'd venture to say that is actually the case.

The OPK picks up the LH surge that comes 12-36 hours before the egg is released... so if you got a positive OPK today, you best start shagging in earnest because that egg is about to drop! I doubt the cramp was the egg releasing... if you were currently ovulating, in theory the OPK would have been negative (because the LH surge would be over already)

I wouldn't worry about your cervix position, it's still got time to move between now and when the egg's eventually released. Also bear in mind that everyone's different, your cervix might not move up as high as average.

In sum, you're in the running! Good luck!

Thanks for that, yeah since I came off the pill my cycle has been 31days and last month I got a positive opk on day 19. I guess I'm just panicking/wondering as I'm new to all of this! I'm trying to find out as much as possible!
Thank you for a your replies
Ps. The opk pack said to start on day 15 due to my cycle length should I be starting earlier in the cycle?

Sparkle, have you considered temping alongside OPK's? I found this to be useful as I could see the temperature spike after ovulation which confirmed the OPK +.

FWIW some months I never had a clear + with OPK and when I fell pg with DD1 no +ve at all, although I knew I had ovulated as I was temping then. I'm not sure how reliable OKP's are; some people do well with them but they are also £££

I too have a long-ish cycle, usually O on day 17/18/19 and cycle length about 31 days.

Forgot to mention the most important thig...TMI alert...

Cervical mucus! You'll know when you are very close to ovulation as you'll most likely have clear, slippery cervical mucus and feel 'damp' (ahem Xmas Blush) at the entrance to your vagina. It looks and feels like raw egg white and is often referred to as EWCM (egg white cervical musuc)

This is the stuff you need to look out for! When it's at its most abudant is your most fertile time. I normally have it over four or so days; a bit on the first two days then loads on the next two. Then it dries up immediatley following ovulation.

Sparklesandglitter · 03/12/2011 15:38

Thanks for that I think im going to start checking cm next cycle, how do I do temps? I have seen a lot of reference to it on here but not too sure what it means?thanks :) x

I would sign up to a website called fertility friend. It tells you absolutely everything you need to know about charting your temps and other fertility signs. Watch all the tutorial videos, they are really helpful.
Temping will tell you after you have ovulated (i.e. confirm that you have ovulate and therefore that you can stop SWI if you want).
Other signs (cervical mucus) will help tell you when you are actually ovulating.
Tests (OPKs, CBFM) will help predict when you are going to ovulate.

For temping you need a special basal body temp thermometer (BBT). you can get them on amazon for about £3. You need one that is digital and measures to 2 decimal places. Basically you take your temp (under tongue, rectally or vaginally) immediately on waking every morning, ideally at exactly the same time, before moving or talking. You record the temperature on a chart (use the fertilty friend one). A sustained rise in temperature for 3 days running suggests that you have ovulated. It can be quite hard to see the pattern yourself, but fertility friend will take the guess work out for you. Temping is useful to show when you have ovulated, over time you will hopefully see a regular pattern to help you plan SWI. It is also useful data to show a doctor in the hopefully unlikely event that you end up needing investigations.

It took us one attempt to get pg with DS. It then took 7 cycles to conceive again. It was so upsetting, and 7 cycles is not even that long! The cycle that we got pg was the first one that I actually used every tool available to monitor my cycle: internet cheapie OPKs, CBFM, charting and using mooncup to keep the swimmers in! We actually did less SWI that month than some others.
