big follicles or ovarian cysts on Day 1 - any clues?

Hoping someone can help explain this. A scan to check whether a persistent 4cm ovarian cyst had resolved (it had), found an 18mm follicle on the right ovary and a 1cm one on the left. Later that day my period started, 3 days early. This seems odd because a) surely by CD1 there should be no large follies; and b) my ovaries arent that active (I have a low ovarian reserve and a scan at a previous IVF cycle showed only 3 antral follicles between both ovaries)

Are these normal egg-producing follicles at the wrong time in the cycle, in which case DH is getting v lucky this month? Or have I swapped my big functional cyst for two smaller ones - and is this common in people with low ovarian reserve? I can only find refs to frequent ovarian cysts in people with active ovaries, quite the opposite.

Grateful for your expertise, ladies!
