Mouth is just fine.

TryLikingClarity · 30/10/2011 13:45

Mouth. On the Fertility Friend website they say some women get a better reading from checking their temp in their vagina, but for me I'd rather check my mouth.

HaveALittleFaithBaby · 30/10/2011 15:03

Not arm pit, it's not accurate enough. I could never bring myself to stick it up there

kalidasa · 30/10/2011 15:37

Mouth or vagina both fine; mouth a lot more convenient. Either way choose one and stick to it - switching will muck up the chart.

Whysoserious · 30/10/2011 18:12

Thanks for your help everyone. I think I'll opt for mouth. TTC is enough of a passion killer without having to subject my husband to the image of me rooting around in my bits first thing every morning Blush

I think it's more important to make sure you take it before moving/speaking/drinking and at as consistent a time as possible than sticking it up there.

Orally I quite often get 3 or 4 days together of exactly the same temperature - to the .01th of a degree so I figure that it is precise enough.

TryLikingClarity · 30/10/2011 19:01

Really eurochick? That is interesting.

Every day mine varies by a slight amount - some mornings it would be 35.4 then the next day 35.8 then next day 35.6. Don't think I've ever had it the exact same in the month I've been charting.

HaveALittleFaithBaby · 30/10/2011 20:26

I'm not charting atm but I mine would vary a bit but I'd see an overall pattern.
eurochick has a good point though, avoiding getting up in the night and temping at the same time improves accuracy. I had a couple of confusing charts til I got stricter about that.

TryLikingClarity · 30/10/2011 21:29

I rarely get up during the night unless I really need to pee, and at that 2 mins and I'm back in bed again.

Also, sometimes I go get up at different times, but only varies within about an hour. Usually DS (almost 2 yrs old) gets up at 6:30am but some mornings it's closer to 8am. Would that little of a difference of time affect my temps?

I've spoken to a GP about this and he was sceptical that it would cause temp differences.

I have ordered TCOYF from Amazon, but it is taking it's merry time getting here and I'm getting impatient to learn more! [hwink]

HaveALittleFaithBaby · 30/10/2011 21:33

That book is excellent. GPs are usually quite skeptical hour charting anyway but yes that's quite long time difference. When I charted I woke at 6am even on weekends to be consistent.
Fertility friend have a charting course here which could get you started while you wait for the book.

eurochick · 30/10/2011 22:43

Yes, a time difference of that little could make all the difference. At crucial times (not during period for example) I even set the alarm for weekends so i temp at the same time. I travel quite a bit for work and different room temperatures in hotels and time zones mess with it a bit, but I can still see the overall pattern even when the chart is disrupted by those factors and in my own bed it tends to be very stable (apart from when it is supposed to shift - at ov time and when my period comes).

CareBear1 · 30/10/2011 22:56

I can only admit this as its anonymous on here but I've been taking mine for the last two months both mouth and r (2 different thermometers!). The r readings have given me much more information, it seems to vary more which I think is more accurate for my condition. I have been ttc 4 yrs though so romanticism is long gone! Are any of you following tcm to try to treat any imbalances?

kalidasa · 31/10/2011 17:09

Re - slight differences in the time you take your temperature. I've been charting for 4-5 years so have enough experience to know that for me personally a difference of an hour or so doesn't mess up my chart; and neither does getting up a couple of times in the night (for the loo or a drink) as long as I am not properly awake/up for long stretches. People do vary though, I think it just takes time to work out how flexible you can be about the times. Probably best to set an alarm at your earliest likely time to start with (and just go back to sleep again on days you can lie in).

Vaginal or rectal temping can help if you're someone who breathes through your mouth at night/needs to speak immediately/often forgets to temp before having a drink etc.

eurochick · 31/10/2011 18:40

As well as the above, I find it helpful to always put the thermometer in teh same spot under my tongue and to hold it in place for a little while (not sure how long, maybe 15-30 seconds) before turning it on.

iggi999 · 31/10/2011 19:00

I know I sleep with my mouth open, so I've been temping vaginally. It might sound strange, but I can stick it in and basically doze off till it beeps at me, which I couldn't do if it was in my mouth - so more relaxing, actually!
I thought it was pretty gross but now I'm pg I do a lot more gross things every day!

TryLikingClarity · 01/11/2011 19:33

Ok ladies, thanx for the advice re temping at same time. I've been setting my alarm the past few mornings for the same time then dozing off again if DS doesn't wake me.
