How many days after you come on are you fertile?

I have a 28 day cycle.

Thanks

given that sperm can survive 5 days, and you would probably ovulate around day 14, I guess from about day nine! That's just a guesstimate. As people can ovulate unexpectedly early in the cycle, you can never say for certain there is any safe time during your cycle before you actually ovulate (unless you go in for thorough charting/persona use etc). It's not impossible for women to get PG if they have sex during their periods!

peachygirl · 28/12/2005 19:31

Hi Blossom
During your cycle you will have different phases and you can tell this with your cervical mucus, obviously when you are ovulating you will be very fertile and this will be over about 3 days, before this you will be relatively fertile and this will last about 5-7 days (depending on your cycle) so it is best to BD around this time too, especially if your DH/DP has good sperm!
I think most people here try every other day at least in their fertile times
I keep posting a link to a website which will explain all this so I'll post it again
trythis
hope this is useful and makes sense

I have a 'just wondered' question too if anyone minds? After bd'ing how long should you stay in the lying down position or doesn't it matter if you get up. Sorry if that seems to be a silly question but was wondering if I should be doing handstands or something afterwards

peachygirl · 28/12/2005 19:38

I think there was a previous post about this, hang on a mo I'll have a look

Nbg · 28/12/2005 19:40

Compo, I did alot of searching on that subject.

I always believed that you had to lie down or stand on your head but apparently not.

LadyTophamHatt · 28/12/2005 19:41

I have a 28 day cycle and all 3 ds's have been concieved between day 11-16.

(is there something you want to tell us BH??)

feastofsteven · 28/12/2005 19:42

I think it helps your chances of conception slightly if you stay lying down for a bit afterwards, but it's not absolutely necessary.

compo · 28/12/2005 19:42

thanks nbg. My cycle is about 40 days so I guess i should be looking more at around day 20 to go for it

peachygirl · 28/12/2005 19:46

couldn't find it on the messages maybe we were subtle when talking about it LOL, but I found this on a website whch sort of backs Feastofsteven up - it doesn't have to be that long.
"Don't hop up and run to the bathroom right after you make love. Lying down for at least a few minutes (some fertility experts say five minutes) after intercourse increases the odds that the sperm will be able to keep their date with the awaiting egg and that you'll win at baby roulette."

compo · 28/12/2005 19:47

thanks peachygirl - I guess that makes sense. It's when we fit in a quickie when it's not bedtime (which admittedly is hardly ever!) that I get this mad urge to get up straight away and do things whilst dh falls asleep

Blossomgoodwill · 28/12/2005 19:51

Oh gawd what have I started.

I don't want to get pg, sorry.

Was just casually checking if it is ever safe as such as fed up of bloody condoms.

Blossomgoodwill · 28/12/2005 19:52

Mind you have to say I have been feeling ever so broody the past week or so.
I absolutely love babies but find toddlers hard. So if I could keep them tiny I would have another tomorrow ( as long as it slept all night from day 1 too )

hunkermunker · 28/12/2005 19:53

Compo, ovulation's not that simple. I have a 40-50 day cycle and my pregnancy dates as if I conceived with a 28-day cycle (ie ovd on day 14). 14 days before your period starts is a total average and can be VERY misleading.

feastofsteven · 28/12/2005 19:55

That sort of safe period type of theory resulted in Steven

Seriously if you go down the Persona/tracking your cycle via cervical mucus/temperature etc then you could dispense with the condoms at certain times of the month without much risk. (NB Persona doesn't have a brilliant track record as a contraceptive - think it's 94% effective).

compo · 28/12/2005 19:55

there's always the rhythm method but you have to be very sure of your cycle

compo · 28/12/2005 19:56

thanks Hunker - I guess I just need to bd all the time but it's so tiresome

LadyTophamHatt · 28/12/2005 19:59

BH, The rhythmn method is fine as long as you know your cycle, which I do.
We say we use condoms but actually we don't.

I learnt alot about the signs of ovulation from MN

peachygirl · 28/12/2005 20:02

Blossom
I agree with Feastofsteven
I would recommend a visit to your local family planning. Ask for the natural family planning clinic. This is what I did after I had my implant out I was tired of hormones, and DH not keen on condoms either. You may have to get into temping and charting your CM but you will had a good portion of your cycle where you can have unprotected sex and have no risk of pregnancy, you can choose you use condoms when you are relatively fertile or abstain. The nurse will take you through everything step by step or you could get a persona machine

Blossomgoodwill · 29/12/2005 09:06

Thanks everyone. I would love dh to have the snip but he won't much to my annoyance.

I had the coil for 5 years and really don't wan't another one. So was thinking maybe this is the only way.

LTH - Can you really tell when you ovulate? I do get pains on my left hand side when I do. Knowing my luck I'd get it wrong!

Thanks for that PG, I will book an appointment!

OP posts:
LadyTophamHatt · 29/12/2005 09:15

BH, yes I really do....but only by learning about it here.

TMI but for me it's the...err.... "egg white" stuff that gives the game away.
Unless I've got it all totally wrong that is

LadyTophamHatt · 29/12/2005 09:15

I don't get any pains, just the egg white!!

Blossomgoodwill · 29/12/2005 09:17

Yes LTH I know what you mean by egg white. I hate it when I get it. It's horrible

LadyTophamHatt · 29/12/2005 09:23

I fell PG with each ds around days 11-16 but since having Ds3 I seem to ovulate at different times so it's excellent that I know the signs.
Also it has become alot more obvious after each baby IYKWIM

Blossomgoodwill. If you don't want to get pregnant get DH to get the snip. I was one of those who fell pregnant during a period! And I know I did cos it was the only time that month we had sex and bingo.... baby number 3! When I said this to the midwife (cos I was in shock.. I thought it was impossible to get pregnant during a period) she said. "Ah yes, a few of my ladies have tripped up like that!" WELL THEY NEED TO WRITE IT SOMEWHERE IN VERY LARGE LETTERS!!!!!
