Not sure if many will be on here today but I wondered if anyone can tell me if you can get a false positive?

My best mate has been TTC for years and today did a test and got a positive result. She said she's not going to get too excited yet as it may be false but I thought this couldn't happen???

Anyway, it's the BEST present to hear this news so I hope it is a BFP!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!

never heard of a false positive before, but i suppose the test could be faulty. Hope not. Merry Christmas to you HB, and to your expectant friend.

Fingers crossed then. She's been feeling ill, crying a lot etc. recently so it sounds like she is - I hope so, she's wanted this for YEARS!!!

Highly unlikely a false positive, she prob is pregnant imo.

Barring a faulty test, it is not possible to get a false positive. This is because a pg test measures hcg which is a hormone only produced after fertilisation. You can get a faint positive (because it is still early in the pregnancy and there is less hcg) but not a false positive.

However, your mate is right to temper her happiness with caution because early miscarriage is sadly not unusual - some pgs only continue for a few days before AF and are called "chemical pregnancy". Having said that, the odds are good and fingers crossed ...

My best wishes to your mate

You can get a false positive... in the days following a miscarriage (even an early one). Maybe that's why she is not trying to get over excited.

I don't blame her for not getting too excited as she's tried for soooo long and she also went through my m/c with me and knows how common this could be.

I just wanted to ask the question as I so want her to be pg - at least this means she can get pg iyswim!

Thanks for all the replies! Enjoy the rest of your Christmas!
