Coming off the pill to get pg.

We are going to start ttc soon. I am on day 14 of my pack of pills, so only a week left on them.

DP works away for 5 weeks at a time so we know he is going to miss some of the times I am ovulating.

It says on the leaflet with my pills to leave 2 months between stopping and starting to ttc. But we'll miss 2 ovulations if we have to leave 2 months between which doesn't appeal to us. If I was to stop taking them now half way through. Would it make any difference?

Is there a reason why you have to wait 2 months?

I think it is more to help with dates if you find yourself pregnant straight away

If I stopped taking them now instead of finishing the pack will it muck up my cycle? We said we'd use condoms til after my period but it's going to be messed up isn't it?

I was taking the kind of pill that you take without a 7 day break andI just stopped in the middle of a pack.
I would suggest googling the name of your pill and see if you can get suggestions straight from the manufacturer. They might have an FAQ section.

I might be wrong but I have read that women can sometimes ovulate more than usual immediately stopping the pill or after stopping any hormonal contraception. If I recall it is similar to the increases fertility one experiences after childbirth or loss of a pregnancy.

Am no expert but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

So thats the opposite to what I thought then. I did think that it was because the hormones from the pill meant you still couldn't get pregnant.

I think it might be best to finish the pack hormone wise though I am no expert. I was told by my doctor there was no need to stop taking the pill for a while before ttc so I don't think it would do any harm if you ttc before 2 months. I agree with mrspear think its just to do with your dates if you do get pg. good luck x

As I said I'm no expert but I have seen some anecdotal reports of people producing more than 1 egg as a rebound affect after stopping hormonal contraceptives

I had no idea that TTC immediately after coming off the pill could increase the chance of twins! Why do they not print these things on the pack??

I think if you produce more than one egg in a cycle that doesn't necessarily lead to twins, as they may be produced some time apart and one dies. I'm not an expert at all. Not sure about coming off pill mid-cycle but since the pill suppresses the normal hormonal cycle anyway I can't imagine it particularly matters. I expect you would still get the withdrawal bleed - caused by disappearance of oestrogen (i.e. the pill) in your system. I have just come off the pill and seem to have ovulated fairly normally, i.e. just over 2 weeks after the withdrawal bleed after stopping the pill - so if you stop now you could be ovulating in about 2 weeks time.

My GP (admittedly a super-laid-back one) said there was no need to wait before TTC, though in fact we are waiting, but for other reasons. As others have said it was only for dating better, but as most women don't ovulate on CD14 anyway, and they are so good at dating with ultrasound these days I don't think it really matters.
