TTC Baby no2 - HPTs positive but GP test negative?

Hi - i have been ttc since miscarriage in Dec 10 and my period is due in
4 days time.

I took a First Response test 6 days before my period is due and it came back positive (faint line) so i have since repeated the test a further 3 times just to make sure inc. this morning. (My period is due on 21/06/11). However, i went to GP today who also done a pregnancy test (just urine dipstick) and it was negative ?? i'm really confused as i have been light headed and my stomach has a full feeling and my breasts feel sore. The GP did check for water infection as im prone to them and confirmed i have urine infection and wanted to give me antibiotics but as i refused as i think i may be pregnant as 4 first response tests cant be wrong? Does anyone have advice? Thank u

the first response ones are one of the most sensitive tests and will detect the hormone levels earlier than regular tests.

Normal tests are about 40% accurate 4 days before af is due so id book another appointment for next week, a few days after af is due.

You're testing early. You can expect mixed results when doing this. Leave it until your period is late and go back. And get some antibiotics! Some are fine in pregnancy and you need to treat the UTI.

FWIW most GPs won't test for pregnancy anyway. HPTs are sensitive enough. But if the GP knew your period wasn't even due yet they they might be being cautious, the danger of early testing being that it also picks up 'chemical pregnancies'.

Im surprised your GP tested for you as with all of my pregnancies my GP just took my word for it as HPTs are so good these days. Like SOH said wait and test again when AF is offiicially late, good luck.

My thoughts exactly. GPs don't test usually. I'd imagine that's because they take the HPTs AND the late period as confirmation. But if you're going in 4 days before you're even due with symptoms of a UTI as well, I think they will of course proceed with caution.

I'd say go back to your GP ask for antibiotics that are safe on pregnancy eg amoxicillin. They usually give trimethoprim for uti which isn't safe. I had a uti.during 2ww last year, amoxicillin stored me out. I would think the above are right, your FR is more sensitive than GP test (let's face it by the time most women query at GP about being pg they're already further along so test doesnt need to be too sensitive!). In meant time take plenty of fluids and take it easy. It's important to treat utis in pregnancy. Hth and you.feel better soon.

Thank u so much everyone. I will make another appt after period is due and drink lots of water and cranberry juice in the mean time. Just to let u know I took a clear blue digital test this morning just to try another brand and it also came up pregnant est. 2-3 weeks!!! Fingers crossed all is ok !

clear blue digital ones are not extra sensitive so if it says 2-3 weeks then your definately pregnant!!!

I would like to add that UTI's in pregnancy can be quite dangerous and lead to miscarriage, so you should definitely get that sorted out with antibiotics - sometimes water and cranberry juice isn't enough.
