IUI Experiences?

Hey,

My wife and I are going for our first try at IUI next weekend & I'm very nervous about it. I'm carrying our first so would love to hear some of your experiences.

Hey Claralou. Unfortunately I don't know much about this procedure. But from what I have read, they put the sperm directly into the uterus through the cervix, which would seem to me like you would have a much better chance of conceiving, without having to wonder if the sperm made it up the cervix in the first place... Well that's my not so educated opinion. But best of luck. Update to say how you got on. Are you using a sperm donor? Cuz there are a couple of threads where women are asking how to find them...

We had IUI while taking clomid and were amazingly lucky - we conceived on the first round!! I'd convinced myself it wouldn't work and so felt reasonably relaxed. Was stunned to get a positive 12 days after the procedure.

Thanks Catface & Laska. It's nice to get some friendly responses. Was very nearly put off this forum by one rude response. Which is a huge shame as I'm reading a mumsnet book ATM and have had friends recommend I check out the forum.

Great to hear you were so successful Laska. Fingers crossed we are that lucky. Any advice?

We are using a sperm donor, through a clinic so they do the hard work finding them etc.

Good luck to you both. I had 4 goes of IUI and the only discomfort was the horror of being trapped in stirrups with my hoo-ha on display under surgical lighting!

good luck for the IUI - I had 6 goes (unmedicated) before getting pregnant with IVF (DS now 13 months)

IUI itself was pretty straightforward not much worse than a smear test - my clinic always suggested drinking lots of water beforehand as it helps them get access and you can get up and walk around as soon as its done

The hardest part I always found was the 2 week wait (2WW) afterwards waiting to see if it works so I would try to distract yourselves as much as possible and support each other.

I suspect (hope) the rude response was a misunderstanding based on the poster wondering why you were talking about trying to conceive when your wife is up the duff.

Claralou436 I was confused by the post and I have 'met' you on anther post - so don't be too offended. I though you meant you were already carrying!

I have replied on the other thread (but for the benefit of anyone interested) we got regnant on our second cycle of IUI with just one follicle (our first attempt we had two follicles). If you have the same treatment as us you would get injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce two or three follicles. You will be scanned regularly to see how the follicles are developing. When they get to about the right size you would get a 'trigger' shot (not sure what the drug is called but it will trigger your ovaries to release the bounty!). The sperm is introduced into the correct place at a certain time in relation to when the trigger is given (or rather you would know when you will have the insemination and the trigger shot will be given a certain period of time before. Some women inject themselves and others might get their partner to do it. I got my hubby to inject me. On one occasion he got confused and tried to inject me with just the sterile water (we were using the injection where you mix a powder and sterile water). I noticed that he had not mixed it, we had a good laugh, he got all set to inject again and then nearly did the same thing again! So advice is stay alert!
